I was thinking of having an enclosure made that is 7ft3 after all displacements. Tuned @ 20hz. with a port that is 20" x 4" x 70". Do I need a larger enclosure than 7ft3 and is the port the right size? My friend has an almost exact same enclosure I can have for free that is 7ft3 tuned @ 20hz but the port is only 16" x 3". Will the box I'm having made be that much better or should I use my friends enclosure? It will be used mostly for movies.

More a DIY subforum question, you might get more response by asking for someone to model it for you there (maybe have a mod move the post there). Or try something like Winisd and model it yourself.... http://www.linearteam.org/

fuzz that would be great if you could model it? is a 16" x 3" port way too small at 7ft3 @ 20hz?

There are some issues with that design, one of which is the vent air velocity which exceeds 35 m/s at 15 hz. The response also doesn't look awesome either.

the response is bad because of the port?

The problem with the port has to do with with the vent air velocity. IIRC vent air velocity is supposed to stay around 17m/s or less. Your sub is modeling that around 20Hz so you'll need a pretty steep filter to compensate for that. I PM'ed you the models and it shows this on the graph. I also sent 3 other models, a Vented model, a vented with high pass filter, and a sealed.

I had a look at the response with the BassBox Pro6 and I'm not impressed at all with the response.
The problem is that its Qts is too low to perform with a smooth response in both sealed and ported cabinets of reasonable dimensions.

I would rather suggest to the OP to get a Dayton UM18-22 and use Parts-Express recommendations for the cabinet.

According to his post it leads me to believe he already has the driver so recommending any other drivers isn't really practical. Also, I've experimented with these drivers in small sealed cabs and I can vouch for their performance in a 4cuft sealed cab with the caveat that they're given enough power and some EQ.

We are talking about one of the best drivers ever made not some unknown quantity. If you go to Data-Bass you'll see this driver in builds that are very close to the top. Unfortunately normal porting isn't really practical due to how much air it moves. It's really designed for sealed operation or IB operation. Although it does amazing things in a horn apparently. It's not really a practical horn for a home theater though.

I agree with you, but one can sell a subwoofer and get another one as a replacement if he is not happy with it.:D

You have a good point in that you can always EQ them provided that the amp driving them has enough power.

Selling an LMS Ultra for a Dayton is like selling a Ferrari for Nissan IMHO

In my book, it cannot be considered as one of the best drivers if you need to EQ it to achieve a reasonably decent smooth response. As you know, there are other subwoofers on the market that don't need that kind of processing to do an adequate job IMHO.

I did some verification using the BassBox Pro software and that driver, in an IB operation, won't reach low frequencies unless you EQ it. It's Qts is too low.:)
It represents, when properly EQ'd, a good driver for movies and rock music, but not for serious music listening.

Of course, we have the right to disagree.

I am going to try my friends enclosure that's tuned to 20hz with a 16" x 3" port and see if I like it. 7ft3 should be good. I heard these can go in small enclosures and work great!
