I answered your question in post#10 (the last paragraph), you don't need a new AVR as such. @lovinthehd did point out some minor inconvenience using the get around solution, that is, using HDMI splitter, optical digital audio, HDMI ARC etc. I thought he mentioned it on this thread but I could not find it now so may be it was in a different thread.
You provided more details than I did in my post #13 if that's what you're thinking about...using the avr as switching center is my preference rather than fool around with extra connections/devices....

Several years ago, I had a Phase Linear 400 power amp and I never saw the needles move. I was driving very efficient Altec A7 transducers with it.
The photo of PENG's Marantz shows a scale from -50dB to +3dB while your Phase Linear meters were scaled from -20dB to +3dB (click the Marantz image to enlarge):

It was something about not being able to see the avr's on screen display when using a 2nd HDMI for audio and player to TV, maybe it was someone else on another thread.

Thanks PENG, I missed that. By media player in that last paragraph, did you mean a blue-ray player or similar? Sorry I don’t know all the terms. Is there some place that lists all these terms, like a glossary or FAQ?

Btw, I connected the Apple TV HDMI to the avr instead of the tv, as you suggested and now I haves sound through the speakers, so thanks for that!

Regarding 4k contents, he can simply connect his source players, cable box etc., directly to the TV via HDMI and use the second HDMI port (some players have 2) to feed audio to the Pioneer. Some media players don't have 2 HDMI ports but I understand 4K capable splitters are now available. In fact I plan on getting one for my PS4 pro.

I know now, sorry.

Just found it, see post #14 by mtrot

He said:

"Thus, I am using two HDMI cables from the Oppo, one going directly to the Sony TV, and the other going to the Denon 5200 for audio. This is not an ideal situation, as I can no longer see the Denon overlay on my TV. This is a problem because, not only can I not see my Denon settings, but neither can I "see" the music files that I play off my latptop pc via the Internet Music feature of the Denon. I play a lot of flac files via Media Monkey and I'm used to being able to scroll through them by looking at them on the TV screen via the direct HDMI cable coming from the 5200."

I am suffering from the same inconvenience trying to get around the lack of hdcp 2.2 compliance for 4k pass through.

Hi, just wanted to update that I ordered a Denon x3400 for 800.00. Could have gone with the x3300 and saved 200.00 but it would have been delivered next week, whereas the 3400 is being delivered on Friday so I have the entire weekend to play around with it!
