Hi all,

I am looking for a used 7.1 (minimum) receiver.

I am interested in a former flagship model from 2010, 2011 or 2012. Hopefully, around $500 - $800. Not interested in the latest Atmos, etc, only 7.1. What wouuld you recommend?

I'm using 7 JBL monitors, 4410a's for the front, and 4408a's for the rears.

Thanks in advance

I’ve had great luck with Yamaha flagships.

The Yamaha AVRs have the best reliability, and HDMI/HDCP compatibility. Be very careful of Denon AVRs built between 2011 to 2014. During this period Denon went through very severe financials as they tried hard to increase market share by big-box internet sellers...
They ended up selling more entry-level units but lost significant $ as well..
Unfortunately they suffered significant quality issues through their OE Chinese subcontractor while losing the crucial support of the more loyal AV specialist. However, note that Denon AVRs built in Japan during this period typically had better reliability than the lower cost Chinese origin products...

Just my $0.02... ;)

Most mid-range Denon products are made in China. Never seen a D&M flagship made in China.

I'd bid upto your $800 limit and I think good change to get it. You may or not use snipping tools like Gixen, but I haven't had much luck with these recently.

Denon flagship AVRs are built in Japan, currently other model AVRs are built by Inkel Corp. in Vietnam. Previously in 2015. the Inkel factory was in Shenzen, China. We have visited both factories multiple times..

I would get the $1,000 Denon X3300 for $484 LIKE-NEW condition from Amazon Warehouse or wait for the price to drop from $699 down to $599 BRAND NEW on Amazon.

@M Code, It seems just about all of the manufacturers that use China, have suffered quality control issues. I first experienced this back in 2011 with a Harman Kardon 3600 unit HDMI went out next up was an Onkyo unit. Not bottom feeder units have had 1000 bucks Subs burn out just past warranty. Yeah getting burnt a few times can leave a sour taste in your mouth. When this happens thousands of times people get tried of spending hard earned money on junk. I came very close to scrapping all my gear and be done with this hobby. After all it's not a necessity like refrigerators, stoves that are necessary for living. One of the main reasons when I walk into one of my friends homes and see a nice HDTV and no surround set-ups I ask why not? The first thing they say is that's a lot of money to waste on equipment that won't last past 2 3 years.

Biggest issue is that only Yamaha owns their own factories, the majority of other brands use out-sourcing and their production/QA controls are questionable..

@M Code, Yep Yamaha does in fact own their factories. Probably the main reason their units are so reliable. They Yamaha are into a lot more than audio/video gear as I am sure you know. Plus they have very deep pockets.

Integra gets my vote.
I'd temper that for the time period (2009-2012 mfr dates) of the known hdmi/network board issues they issued the extended warranty program for....and that program expires this year IIRC.

Integra is Onkyo brand and for a while, as McLovin correctly mentioned - they had whole bunch of QC issues. 805 ran hot but mostly was ok as long as heat was dealt with. starting from TX-SR806 models (sirca 2008) QC problems begun.

Most issues with heat I've seen are due to neglect or cramming the avr in a closed cabinet. As you said as long as the heat is dealt with they are good to go. I have wondered why these issues do not seem to appear so much with Denon marantz, I would be curious to see the top of line units and their track record. Personally I've never had an issue with any onkyo or Integra, it works for me which is where my praise for them falls into place. They are also priced very well for what they are.

I have 10 year old 805. bought it new on amazon. last year had to fix LED power by re-soldering two resistors (apparently original ones were much under spec'd) Other than that, it's working fine within its limits. Given the fact Onkyo dropped audyssey and replaced it with in-house developed and completely unknown room calibration system, that's the final nail for it , at least for me. No doubt it would be (eventually) replaced by some model from D&M.

Many many of the failures, that's why they initiated a special program. Huge thread on avsforum about the warranty program and all who were participating let alone before that. Some may have been exacerbated by users with heat issues, sure, but mine was vented well and suffered the problem early last year (and now after warranty repair works great, less heat than before I think too but didn't measure).
