My receiver went out in my woodshop and I need to replace it. I have 4 Cerwin Vega RE 30 speakers, one in each corner. Since it is in my wood shop the unit gets covered in dust and dirt and I don’t think it will have a long life. I thought, I would go to the pawn shop and grab a receiver and be done. Not the case. You can’t even tell I have full range speakers hooked up with that receiver. I need help in finding a receiver that will make these speakers pound and is on the less expensive side. Thank you for all your help and suggestions.

The problem I am having when I've been looking at all these receivers is that they dont say the bandwith. I don't know if they are full range or like the one I just picked up cuts out at 70 hz. I need to find a true full range 4 channel receiver and the guys at best buy are no help.

I've never seen a receiver that can't handle 70hz....there are no true "4 channel" receivers....unless you're thinking the old quadraphonic stuff or something that's long been abandoned?

I think he is referring to a 2-channel stereo receiver with A/B speaker outputs..

Just my $0.02... ;)

The problem with the a/b speaker output is when you use both together the ohm level gets cut I half like if I would bridge the speakers

If you're a wood shop, build a cabinet with AC filter panels and a computer fan to keep whatever you buy both cool and dust free.

What I think I need is to find a receiver that is 4 ohm stable on 4 channels so 2 front 2 back and I won' use the center channel or something I just want to make these speakers pound again and with Xmas I already spent way too much on my family and the bank amount is ....:(

The RE-30s are 4 Ohm loudspeakers. Since they are same brand/model just series each pair (- to + to - to +) then connect the "-" & "+" to the amplifier speaker output, this equals an 8 Ohm load to the amplifier.

Just my $0.02... ;)

I am afraid if I wire them up like that I would not have the power to make them move

The RE-30s have a high sensitivity spec, meaning they don't require much power to drive to a loud volume level..

Just my $0.02... ;)

It appears so, LOL don't think that way when I see "4 channel".

An avr in multi-ch stereo mode can do well enough, better than a lot of 2ch receivers with a/b channels that aren't really meant to be used simultaneously.

Why does it need to be a receiver, need the tuner particularly?

What was the original receiver and the one that was attempted for replacement?

The reason for the receiver is I need the radio tuner, a spot to plug my phone in, and subwoofer rca out. Is there such thing as am inexpensive 4 ohm receiver that I can buy to get me by?

What's the budget? What were you using before?

What "went out" in your old shop unit?

The old unit was a 1970-1980 Harmon Kardon. I took it apart and tried to fix it but just made to worse. I have $200 right now and that won't grow until March. I work in there every night. The cheap pawn shop receiver could get me by but the subwoofer on my speakers dont even seem to move with it.

The replacement one is a 5.1 channel Sony 100w a channel. I don' like it at all.

With that budget you're going to need a good score on craigslist or thrift store or something then, maybe think about putting it into repairing the HK unit (does it still work as a pre-amp?, maybe just add a power amp). I'd try MCode's wiring suggestion in the meantime....

ps Model numbers would be more interesting than vague descriptions....

I did not realse it would be so expensive to replace it and it's gone. I am kicking myself hard! What do I need to save up to to get something like what I had? I will live on Roman like I was in collage to get a good replacement quicker. Thank you lovinthehd for responding and your help. You are too kind to this broke audio lover. Preferably something I can save up for sooner than later. Thank you again for your time.

So how did you connect the R520 and what settings did you utilize? Did you try wiring them in series? Or just using one pair of your speakers? What sub do you have?
