A couple of things of note now:
1) As to your question, at the time I wrote that post I had what I have always had. Namely, Surround sound via the AVR with the volume down on the TV. The TV connection begins with a cable box via coax in and then coax out to the TV. Without the cable box I have no other source for sound or video.
2) HOWEVER, now I don't even have that! The Denon is NOT providing surround sound (Dolby or ProLogic etc) on either the TV OR the DVD Player. Both had worked just fine before I started doing my exploring. Somehow, someway, I have managed to change a setting that I can not undo. NOW, everything is ANALOG...and so I get NO sound from the Denon on anything. The TV continues to work just fine with video and sound. I am attaching a very poor photo (taken with a flash which lights everything in the background as red but nothing showed without a flash) which shows that the system is on ANALOG even when the rest of the description reads "Dolby, or 5.1 Surround, or Prologic" etc. I have followed the procedures in the manual (pgs 25 &39) to make it Digital but nothing I do changes it. So I have royally screwed it up and have literally spent hours trying to get it back at least to the way it was. This anomaly MAY be the reason the Optic Cable did not work....even though at the time I continued to have full sound via the Denon. I now have the "Auto" input read on and that's why it is automatically reading "Analog". Perhaps I unplugged or loosened a cable or connection in moving it around so tomorrow I will go back into the back of it and see what's going on. Anything in particular you suggest I check that would cause this problem? There is a button on the remote as well as the unit itself marked ANALOG and when it is pressed "Analog" shows up....but when I switch to any other sound choice e.g. ProLogic TV it will still show up with "Analog" right below it. (Enlarge the photo...right edge in the middle.) Obviously, the AUTO set for the imput is reading analog and that's why I am unable to change even with reassigning the outlet/device. Other than loose cabling what should I check? The Denon is not getting a digital signal any longer....so neither could the TV via the optical cable......??
This has become a full time job, eh? Any suggestions are appreciated.
