Yamaha RX-A3030 no subwoofer with phono hook up

I just picked up a Yamaha RX-A3030 and have a turntable connected but I get no subwoofer when I'm in the "phono" mode. I do have the subwoofer when watching TV or watching movies on Blu-ray. What should I be looking at to troubleshoot this issue?

That receiver has some strange modes, such as "compressed music enhancer" and "high resolution music enhancer". Poring over specs and reviews I don't see a simple "stereo with sub", so I guess you have to use one of those two and shut off a lot of "extra features" to get simple 2.1 channel music for an analog source.

If my assumption is right it's defaulting to Pure Direct mode for analog 2-channel input. To get the sub working it has to send that signal through the receiver's DSP section.

EDIT: Looks like the only way to get it is to toggle through the stereo modes button on the remote by repeatedly pressing that button.

if u want ur main LR speakers + Sub put the sound mode in "Straight" for "Phono" or any other output. more than likely ur in "Stereo" mode.

I think Ponzio is saying get out of pure Direct mode and use either 2 channel stereo or straight mode. The difference between the 2 channel Stereo and Straight mode is that 2 channel stereo mode down mixes multiple channels down into two channels where as straight mode outputs the same number of channels as its input. Since we are talking about a phono input which is only 2 channel, the output result would be the same for both modes.

I'm not sure what mode I am set to but the program used is 9 channel sterio
The 9 channel mode should work. Is your sub set to auto or on? If its set to auto meaning auto detect, maybe there's not enough signal to trip the sub into turning on. Try turning your sub to on.

I think it has been set to "auto", I'll check and try it set to "on"

That's got to be one of the least 2-channel-music-friendly AV receivers I've ever seen. The $200 (brand new) Pioneer VSX-530K I'd bought was far easier. Love my NAD T758 for how simple it is to use in 2 or 2.1 channel mode.

Whats so difficult about it?

In order to have a subwoofer out signal with a stereo 2.0 source, the audio DSP processor needs to create an L+R low passed mono output. If the AVR is set in the Direct mode the audio DSP is bypassed, also if not in the Direct mode the bass manager for the front L/R speakers needs to be set to Small to have a Subwoofer out signal if the source input does not have an 0.1 LFE channel.

Just my $0.02... ;)

Well I checked the SW and I already switched it from "auto" to "on". After looking at the troubleshooting section in the owners manual I saw a suggestion to turn "extra bass" "on'' so I did. I'm getting the SW to fire now.

Good to hear. It sounds like they changed the AVR quite a bit from the RX-V1800

Are your speakers set to large?
