AV Receiver Question

Can someone please explain to me how an AV receiver with 9 discrete amplifiers and 11.2 processing works? The Marantz SR7012 states that you can configure a 5.2.4 or a 7.2.2. If you add an external amp then you have the option of setting up a 7.2.4. My confusion comes in from a response from a previous post that stated I could not use my Emotiva XPA-3 to power my fronts while using the remaining amps in the receiver to take care of the surrounds and height channels. Thanks in advance for clarifying this for me.

That makes zero sense. Amps plug into the pre outs and just leave the powered connections open. You may need to configure some of the other powered outputs for their optional content (ie sub2 May be a atmos channel). I know this doesn’t help but it doesn’t at all sound right. Download the manual and look it up?

It'll vary with particular receivers as to how much flexibility their amp assignment has for particular channels. I doubt you'll have a problem with using an external amp for your mains at all, but with some receivers you may need to use another external amp for some of the height channels, i.e. you can't reassign unused amps in all cases. Check the amp assignment section of the avr's manual for details.

Thank you for your prompt responses. I am in the process of upgrading my 7.2 to a 7.2.4 Atmos system. I am looking at the Marantz SR7012 and the SR8012. Since I already have an Emotiva XPA-3 why spend the extra $800 on the SR8012? Also seems like a waste of amplifiers if I will never use them. For obvious reasons I only want the Emotiva XPA-3 to drive the three front channels. This means that I must be able to assign the 9 amps in the SR7012 to the surrounds and height channels. Is this possible? I cant find this anywhere on Marantz's site.

Personally not aware of the differences between 7012/8012 that you're referring to (but I'm not looking either), but likely the differences are relatively minor. I used to use power amps with my avrs but don't any longer myself so obvious reasons aren't registering all that much either, depends on speakers/spl goals.

Download the manuals for the avrs you're interested in and review the amp assign sections....

Amplifier assignment was a lot simpler when I had the NAD T763 AVR as it had separate inputs for each inboard amp.
Most AVRs today don't have both pre-outs and inboard power amps inputs. You just have to use external power amps to do the job.

This is true. They used to have full 7.1 inputs for SACD and the like. Made integration really easy and gave lots of flexibility. Not sure they have this now.
