Good source of set up help on Denon X3400h? Use URC? Samsung Smart TV

Hello all. Just need something to jump start my learning curve since this this my 1st receiver upgrade in like 12 years. Do you have any recommendations where I should go to get general help on how to get the most of of my new receiver?

I am running into little troubleshooting issues like the receiver sometimes wanting to go into Denon set-up every time I turn it on (I complete it every time as well).

I also want to truly integrate it well with my Samsung Smart TV...There is definitely a lot going on between the two devices. The physical connections are fine...I just want to start to dummy-proof it for the family. I still need to re-program my URC (with Complete Control Software). ...and Should I even bother with that? It seems like the receiver pushes me toward the App...Just would like some big picture direction on how I should set this up. (Hope I am making sense here)

I have had some big systems in the past but this technology is pretty new to me. It's humorous to me that it doesn't even come with a manual...I have to access that online. jeez. haha.

If it were me, I'd purchase a streaming device rather than use the TVs smart features. Smart TVs typically don't output 5.1 audio, and the ARC function causes many issues.
As for your URC, what equipment from them are you using? What gear are you controlling? If you want to use an app, I'd URCs app, as macros are typically the most needed feature.

Hummm...interesting on the output of the audio (I didn't know that!). Yes, I am feeling like the ARC is causing issues. Should I use a standard HDMI port along with an Optical digital cable? (I actually already ran one through the wall that I was using with last receiver)

I used to have a bunch of components (Xbox, WDTV, DVD player) but I have decided to eliminate them to clean it up. Right now I have only the Denon & Xfinity box. I also stream from a PC in the other room via PLEX and the kids watch a lot of youtube via the Smart TV. ...oh, and I do also use Netflix..Thanks!!

There are only a couple of displays that will output 5.1, so no matter the connection it will be limited. I'd definitely ditch the ARC connection and use the optical out, but still recommend a streaming device like the WD you were using, that way you get full HD audio. Also IMHO I'd use hard wired over WiFi if possible.

Thank you...I am all hard wired ethernet. I will plug in Optical cable and swtch HDMI to non ARC ports. I used the WDTV for streaming media from PC. The interface however was always slowwwww so I switched to plex.

Is there a better option out there now to access all the common apps (Netflix, youtube etc) as well as streaming media from a PC? In the past, I looked at ROKU but I was limited in certain respects (I can't remember what i didn't like about it ...but there was something that didn't fit my needs at the time)

SO just to clarify, you recommend to completely ditch using apps via the Samsung Smart TV and use the TV purely as a monitor, right? Just want to make sure I am on the same page.

Who programmed it? If you have CCP, that SHOULD have been you (assuming you're a dealer or you work for one), but since it has been set to go into the setup menu, it would seem that the power macro is wrong. If a dealer set it up, make them fix it. If you're not a dealer and weasled the software out of one, read the manuals and learn to program.

This is the reason URC and other remote control manufacturers don't want end users to have their programming software- without knowing how to program, you won't like the remote or whatever you're trying to control and now that you have come here, someone will probably rule out URC as a candidate for their remote.

If you think I'm being harsh, it's because I'm a dealer for both of these brands and it would seem that you bought equipment online, somehow got CCP and now you're stuck- all because you didn't want to pay someone for their expertise. If a dealer actually set this up, I would get in their face- I would be no less harsh with them because they would have charged you for their time, but left their expertise at the shop. If you're an employee of a dealer or integrator and want to learn to program, talk to management and see if they'll let you attend training or log into a training webinar.

You got it right when you wrote that there's a lot going on between the AVR and TV. If you don't know what's going on or how to set it up, you'll never be able to dummy-proof it.

WRT not coming with a manual, think about the number of people who will never read it, then consider the weight of a manual that's printed in English, French, Spanish and probably at least one other language- the cost to print separate manuals for each language is high enough but so many want other languages in the US so people won't need to learn English that owner's manuals need to be multi-lingual. Now, if you considered all of these factors, think about the cost to ship these manuals, which often have 200+ pages- the fact that they aren't read added to the cost for shipping means there's no point in including it, so they put it online. They used to include a CD-ROM, but people didn't bother with those, either.

If your buying decision was based on price, why are you complaining? You got what you paid for. If you had paid a dealer for their time and expertise, it would be working properly. If you DID pay a dealer for this, THEY should make it work.

In construction, there's a saying-

"You can have cheap, good and fast- pick two, because you can't have all three".

Don't use ARC. Manufacturers tell us (Custom Integrators) to avoid using it unless the system consists of a TV and a sound bar and even then, it should be avoided. Also, turn off HDMI Control- if you see a setting for CEC in the TV's menu, turn it off in there, too. ARC and CEC will only bring heartache and since the URC can do everything you want (if it's programmed properly), that's the best way to go.

The XBox is one of the best BluRay players available- if you just don't use discs, you may want to hold off getting rid of it until you see how well the TV streams- many AREN'T as user-friendly as something that ONLY streams.

As for reading the setup manual, that can only be done thru the dealer portal. It's possible that he has a CCP model that was setup by a dealer, or he has something like the mx450 .

Dude (highfigh)...You are being harsh. Come on. I programmed it myself because I am educated and can also read. Shocking right? I spent 600 bucks years ago ($600 for a remote control...think about that) for an earlier model URC from Magnolia Home Theater (Best Buy) and they GAVE me the software...I didn't weasel it out of anyone. Quit acting like home theater installers are the only people that have the brains to program a remote. I have the manual as well...I am just wondering if it worth screwing around with anymore. Don't worry, I will research to find out what exactly is going on with the new technology and I will dummy proof it. (without paying some dude 200 bucks to come out and babysit me every time I add a component) I was simply starting to research a bit by posting here...My bad.

The AVR setup? I opened the web manual and it has pretty good explanations for everything- it should be good enough to eliminate this problem. The setup Wizard could work, too.

If a dealer programmed the remote, they need to stop until & unless they learn to do it correctly. I have seen programming done by people who didn't use the software correctly and only assigned commands to each button, manually (in CCP). Trying to make it work with new equipment was a nightmare! The 450 doesn't need CCP.

Thanks guys...You have given me quite a bit to work with now. I appreciate the direction! The remote that i have been using in recent years is the MX880 w/ MRF-300 for RF (my orig URC died a few years ago) and it has been great.

As I wrote, It was harsh, but I should have added that it's not personal and I KNOW home theater installers aren't the only ones who can do this- I have known many who absolutely couldn't.

Yes, it's worth screwing around with- do the update for the URC and look at YouTube for URC training videos- they should clear up most of the issues. I used "weaseled it out of them" because that's now the vast majority of people get it- URC tells us they don't want it given out because they don't have enough staff working tech support to handle dealers AND end users. To be fair, they concentrate on things that don't have value, to me- one of the trainers was more interested in showing us how to change the look of the buttons than how to program it efficiently and correctly.

Which remote do you have- MX-850? That's still a very usable model.
edit- I just saw that you have the 880.

If you want, send the file to me and I can look for anything that might be causing this problem with the menu showing up. If you haven't saved the configuration, here's the process-

Open CCP
Go to the top and click on Communication
Select 'Get From Remote' and save it to your desktop, so you can send it in a PM.

Again, sorry for being so harsh.

Thanks Highfigh...I do totally understand that some people have no business trying to learn this software. Believe me, I have to relearn how to tweak it every few years when I make a change (ha). Frankly, I think that i am a little freaked out how my new receiver wanted to update their firmware when I plugged it in! I have to again learn what the hell is going on...(haha) Now we are dealing with multiple phone apps etc. It's ironically funny that we are doing all of this with an audio receiver. I truly do appreciate the help from you and everyone else over the years. Thank you. This may show as a new profile but I have been using this forum for 10+ years...I probably could not remember my old login info.

WRT updates- you can't really think of this as a receiver with smart features & abilities as much as a computer that has AV features & abilities- these do need updates because sometimes, a feature will stop working because it's outside of Denon's control (like Pandora making changes without telling Denon/Marantz and a couple of others). Sometimes, they find a better/more efficient way of doing things and sometimes, it's a bug fix.

The first steps with a new AVR are:
1) Perform a hard reset
2) Update the firmware

If you haven't done either, save the configuration (use the computer interface- it's much easier) first, then reload it afterward.
