So, moving to a new house , and getting tired of my crappy all in one dvd/"surround" system has inspired me to take the jump to better equipment.

Home theater recent purchase: Pioneer Andrew Jones 5.1 home theater system and I also just ordered a Sony STR DN1080 AVR.

I also have a pair of Yamaha NS-690II speakers I picked up on Craigslist (listened to them at sellers home, they sounded amazing!) that I will be building a separate 2 channel system for.

Thoughts on any of the above? Comments and opinions are appreciated. I know I have a lot to learn.. Thanks!

Hey Rick, and congrats on the new house! Pics or it didn't happen.

I have no doubt that the equipment you chose will easily outperform your previous home theater in a box. In the future, it would be wise to check here first for opinions about your potential purchases, though. We're much better at offering advice than validation. Having said that, the Andrew Jones Pioneers are solid performers for their price. Depending on how large the room is that you're trying to pressurize, you might consider upgrading the subwoofer. Ultimately, the most important thing is, does your wife approve of your new gear?

Rick, Congrats !

First and foremost.... enjoy the journey as you explore new musical horizons.

I'm not much of a HT guy so I'll let the experts here chime in on that front. Your Yammie speakers you picked up for your 2 channel kit, are the towers or bookshelf ? What do you plan on using for source, digital, analog or both ? Are you going to stream digital, play CD/SACD, or both ? What's your budget to bring all this together ?

Thanks for the quick response!

The wife is... Tentative...

On the subwoofer, what are your thoughts on adding a second one of the same kind? The room is open on two sides with a peak of about 14' at the ridge in the center. Will be putting window treatments up in the whole room. We are moving in this week (pray for us..) so I'll take picks once I dig out and get things set up.

The Yamaha's are the towers, though they are factory rated to 40w, the sound was incredible. As far as the rest of your questions on setup, I'm not sure. As I said, I have a huge learning curve to go through.

That said, i have a TIDAL subscription and plan on streaming that over wifi or directly from a mac mini. Just learning a little about DAC's and amplifiers... Blank page here.

If I could I would like to stay within the realm of $500 to $700 if I could for 2 channel setup, but I really do not know if this is feasible.

It sounds like your Yamaha speakers are pretty efficient, so that gives you some flexibility.

Buying a new house, I know your budget is probably tight right now, so you might be interested in knowing about Accessories4Less. They mostly sell refurbished (by the manufacturer, so it is done right) equipment. I have bought several items from them as have many others here, and they are a good company to deal with. Here is a listing of the stereo receivers they sell ordered by price low to high:

The Yamaha R-N301 Networking Receiver ($200) is probably a decent option if you want to run a cable from your modem straight to the receiver. It has streaming for Spotify.
