Turntable audio question

I have a weird issue that just started. I have a u turn turntable with an installed pre amp. After working without a glitch for about a year, the sound all of a sudden became distant and a little off. I tried multiple things, but when I unplugged one of the white/red 3.5mm AUX cables, the sound went back to basically normal. I can't figure out what I did, or how to get it back to normal without leaving a cord unplugged (which has to be degraded to some extent).

Is it possible to completely change the said cable? Is it detachable on both ends (on the TT and on the amp side)?

when I bought my u turn table I thought I had a phono preamp in my AVR.
I was wrong. I didnt.
So I bought their external phono preamp. I ran on it for about 6 months with no issues at all.
Then I upgraded my AVR and it has a phono preamp so I unplugged the external one and use the one in the AVR.

What I noticed when I set it up (the AVR phono connection) was the sound was distant and far away sounding. RTFM, and I found the phono pre amp input is adjustable so I adjusted it up and its been perfect ever since.

Perhaps you might also look at the input to the AVR (or amp, or whatever its plugged in to)and make sure that's up to snuff as well.

Did you change any other parts of the system? Usually, the sound will become distant/echo/weak when the signal common is disconnected or the wiring polarity is changed on one channel. Did you change the cartridge at any time, or did one of the wires become disconnected at the cartridge?

What is the turntable connected to, as a preamp or receiver? Does it have a Mono button/mode switch?

BTW- the turntable should have RCA jacks, not 3.5mm- if you used 3.5mm, you need the correct cables- it would seem that the plug was making contact accidentally.
