Hi

I have a 12 x 18 home theater with Klipsch quintet speakers, Velodyne sub and a Denon 4300 Av receiver. I'm beginning to upgrade all the speakers but I first would like to start with the sub. The sub still works but it's old and i'm sure the caps are pretty off values.

My question is what sub would work on that size room and would sound great with movies first and music ?

Sub is in the middle of the viewing area marked with an x

Thanks

Is it worth ever upgrading to a new sub from the old Velodyne 1012 ? One thing that bothers me is that it does not have an LFE input in on the amp plate. Would this affect the bass during a movie ?? It only has left and right inputs and i'm just feeding the sub 1 output from the Denon 4300 to the left ( white input ) of the sub. Will a sub with a LFE input make a difference ?

Many subs would be an improvement over the Velodyne (from what I see is a 10" sub with a 12" passive radiator, with a 60w amp and a frequency response of 25-75hz +/- 3dB). LFE inputs on a sub generally simply bypass the low pass filter (a sub with an adjustable low pass filter turned to max value essentially does the same thing; your sub doesn't have an adjustable low pass filter). Your sub does have some crossover capabilities some don't, but your avr has more. I would definitely upgrade this sub, there are many more capable subs....

I ordered 2 JBL 550p subs to replace the old Velodyne ..... think it’s worth a try ??

For the sale price I'd say it's a decent alternative, plus you now get dual sub benefits, especially in a room your size (wouldn't work for me).

Update, the two new JBL's 550 are going back, both can't hold a candle to the Velodyne 1012. The poor JBL's sounded like they wanted to rattle out of the enclosure. Guess the Velodyne will stick around until I can find a better Sub at a a good price. Crazy

Consider also that you may simply be accustomed to the other sub's performance.

Really help if you have a better description of the differences and how you determined them....

Curious, how did you integrate the JBL subs into your system?

Hsu makes solid subs.

I added one sub in the front of the room to the left of the screen and the other on the back of the room behind the second row seating. Then ran the Audusey EQ. It just had no impact during movies. Granted I test a few song with great bass riffs and it was OK but I see why were on sale so cheap.

How did you determine the locations were optimal? What were the resultant sub levels set in the avr? Did you try adjusting the phase?
