I bought Polk Monitor Series 11T speakers 30 years ago. I assumed they were not up to snuff compared to speakers you can buy for comparable prices today, but listened to some music on them using a decent 2-channel amp and they sounded better than I expected. Converting the $950 I paid for the pair in 1987 is equivalent to $2,100 today. What can a new pair of $2,100 speakers bought today do better than my 1987 Polk speakers?

You do not need to spend $2000 -- closeout pricing for the Boston M350 is $699 a pair.

Auuu, a lot. To name just the most simplest and obvious thing - the fact that designers today get to use AutoCAD software when designing the port for bass reflex means they will probably pin-point the desired frequency with accuracy people only dreamt about in '87 (if they are any good at what they do).

And this is really just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

A set of modern $500 speakers could easily beat some older designs nowadays, there has never been a better time in history to get into hifi audio reproduction, where even a pair of $150 budget speakers can offer amazingly high quality sound.
