Emotiva BasX PT-100 Preamp

Searched but did not see any reviews here for the Emotive BaxX PT-100 and just wondering if anyone has experiences with it. I have never had any emotiva gear.

It would be used with a a Sunfire Classic Signature 2x300WPC amp. Sources would be a Sonos connect connected to a DAC, a Thorens TD-126 MKII turntable with Denon high output MC cart, and an Ayre Universal disc player. Eventually maybe to a TV, but not for surround.

It would replace a Sunfire Vacuum Tube Control Center, which has become unreliable and likely not worth repairing -- its been recapped already but there are other gremlins and I don't trust it not to catch fire one day, likely on a day when I am out and forgot to turn it off).Sunfire Preamp blew up a cheap but good Fiio DAC that I was using with the Sonos...Yes the preamp sent a signal the opposite direction through the line in and burned out the output stage of a dac.

I know the Sunfire VTCC is considered a good preamp, and the Emotiva PT-100 not really in the same class besides the difference between SS and tubes. I am not a tube partisan. If I miss the "tube sound" I guess I could always get a tube buffer (er, distortion box). And I wonder if a 2017 $300 pre might, in fact, have similar performance as a late-1990s pre that cost may times more.

The soundstage/imaging is probably the most important SQ issue for me.

The Emotiva checks a lot of boxes for me:

- I would rather not spend $1000+ on a preamp. Choices of decent but affordable pre-amps seem quite limited especially once one adds in that....

- I want tone controls and balance controls. I find the tone controls very useful for dealing with room acoustics, middle-age ears, and varied source material. I want a balance control cause I am bit of an imaging junkie...I like to dial the imagining right in. Ideally I want a mono switch to dial in the balance. The emotive has all everything except the mono switch (it has one, but it is only for the FM tuner, so maybe useful to some degree).

--need a new DAC. the PT-100 onboard DAC seems to be well reviewed from what I read. Was considering getting a $150-250 DAC such as the Schiit Modi Multibit before...now I need both a new DAC and a new preamp. the new pre does not HAVE to have a DAC. but less cable runs to mange, shorter signal path.

-- while I don't need it absolutely, the Emotiva seems to have a pretty good phono preamp. I have Cambridge Audio phono pre already, though I have been using the Sunfire's built in phono stage...which is better than the CA. But I only use the turntable occasionally, so can't justify spending more on a another fancy one AND having it built in means fewer cables means less clutter and shorter signal.

Hmmm...seems I have answered my own question. I have not seen another preamp that close to the same feature set of the PT-100 near its price. I don't absolutely need the pre to also have a phono stage and a DAC but even then the choices are limited. Schiit's Saga looks pretty interesting, but no tone controls.

So unless there are other pre's that come to mind, I guess I will be placing an order with emotiva....

Ever considered an avr? There are some heavy discounts for Denon's 2016 models right now.

AVRs used as a pre are good choices here, it does give you bass management/RC.

I suspect this new Emo Pre is a fine piece of gear, but I have no experience with it.

I do have a slightly older Emotiva USP-1 and I highly rec that Pre-Amp FWIW.

Yeah, honestly I have like zero experience with any dedicated pre-pro. I've always used an avr. I only recently bought a separate amplifier. I might change my mind if I heard what one can do, but I really like my avr for reasons you stated above.

For $300 though, that unit isn't exactly overpriced, imo, and I agree. It's probably a fine piece of gear.

I did think of an avr. I have a surround set up in another room with a Marantz (and that Marantz is pretty good with music). Maybe I will drag it the Maratanz downstairs for a test. I may be a bit old school hi-fi on the 2 channel front;thinking the AVR puts many more things into the signal path that won't be used. Im not a purist (see tone controls) but...Somehow running a turntable through the processors of an AVR seems, well, wrong. And I have never heard an AVR that sounded ok in pure direct mode or whatever its called. may be different just using it as a preamp though. I will look at that option again.

Yes I saw a couple used USP-1 out there, or maybe even an SP-1.

Heck for that matter, I suppose I could just use a DC-1 as preamp, running the Cambridge Audio Phono pre into its analog input and the Ayre and Sonos into the digital. the tuner is not a huge deal. No tone controls....

Man I don't like the way the DC-1 looks though...evokes a car stereo from the late 1980s...

FWIW I currently run my tt thru an avr (and a different avr before the current one), and used to use my dedicated 2ch pre's before that (and still have, just don't find them as useful in my main system). There was no degradation that I could determine in using the avr's phono circuit (mm cartridges for me, tho) when I changed to the avrs. AVRs with pre-outs make for a fine pre amp IMO with more advantages (particularly digital and bass management capabilities) than most 2ch pre's offer. Not just tone controls but graphic eq capabilities as well in many cases. IMO YMMV etc

Ok I will check it out! thanks AVR-its! or is it AVR-ers? Or AVR-arians? Or, for those of Latin flavor AVR-istas? Or for those not hung up on the whole brevity thing, AVR-anadoes!

Hey AVR-ists! What about this integra processors as a pre? never had any experience with integra.

Just Onkyo's "higher end" brand and this one goes back a few years to when they had known issues with hdmi/network boards (and Onkyo had to extend warranties accordingly, see this thread. I think @zieglj01 picked one of these up from A4L, or at least a similar model....

That said, I do have an Onkyo from that period that did develop the issues earlier this year and Onkyo was great in dealing with it, the replaced board even seems to run cooler than it did originally.

Otherwise should do quite well for your purposes I'd think...

If you can swing it I'd spend the extra $150 and get a 3300.

I don't think anyone here is shooting down the pt100, just offering other alternatives. An avr might have way more than you need, and 300 bones isn't breaking the bank. If you like the idea of using a dedicated pre go for it. Emotiva makes good products and I'm sure the pt100 is a great piece of equipment.

I already had a SR6011 with a full set of preouts so when I finally did get an amp it was a no brainer. Plus my system doubles as 5.1 and I really like the variety of features available with an avr with bass management being at the top of the list.

That is some good stuff -- I have the 50.2 refurb from them and no issues -- I like the Integra.

Note that Onkyo/Integra are not really a sour lemon company -- more and more, some other companies also tend to have some problems from time to time.

Thanks again. You cats have given me some stuff to chew on re AVR as an option. I do like my Marantz AVR. It can sound sweet and pretty musical...not overcooked on the dynamics front like music can sound with too much EQ and processing needed for surround sound for video. if you now what I mean.

Its pure or direct mode still sort of stinks however...just dead fish eye sound. the little AVR needs some processing juice it would seem. That is what I worry about with a TT on such a thing...

But I am going to try it out and look not AVR options...

I was checking out some pre-owned ARCAM AVRs on the old eBay....I have heard many an ARCAM integrated that sounded great, and heard their AVRs were also quite good for 2 channel music. And there were some inexpensive choices.....then I discovered the ARCAM AVRs have this tendency to get all sorts of bad electrical demons, cutting off after power on, etc etc that required new boards, etc. No thanks...the British make sweet sounding stuff but, alas, all to often the electrical engineering is too much like the wiring of an MG.

You know what I need? An high end "audiophile" avr with NO room eq or processing. Or tone controls. Or dac. I don't need the tuner either. But with vacuum tubes. Lots and lots of tubes. And about 10 wpc. Oh wait, I think McIntosh makes one of those....hmmm...it's a bit more than $299. Bummer.

Hmm I never thought there were avrs with a phono stage....now I see they do exist. Crazy world. Atmos and phono stage in one place. What will they think of next. though I could use the Cambridge phono pre to a regular line in. So an avr with phono is not make or break.

A good DAC for music would be. I know I know, some will say every dac is the same. Maybe in terms of raw hardware. But different filters can affect stuff

The dac baked into the sonos connect is fine for whole home audio, ceiling speakers, causal listening and such. But it is not the greatest for hi fi. It warm to the point of mushy and sibillent on high freq. bad combo. Could be it's output stage as much as anything else. It's better than older model AirPort expresses. Not as good as the newer airports. Even a $30 Fiio Dac is an improvement. For whatever reason. I really just need it cause I am sending the digital out from a home run sonos connect down coax in wall to the living room system. Worked great until by sunfire tube preamp sent a voltage spike the wrong way and blew the dac output. Poor little fiio box now smells like smoke.
