Problem with receiver

I have a pioneer elite vsx-lx102 and for some reason it will not let me turn my front main speakers to small. Also as of right now it just doesn't seem to be as loud or sound good at all. I have new speakers that should be arriving tomorrow and I will run the setup again on the receiver then, did I buy a crappy receiver there seems to be little to no reviews or videos of this receiver.

Sorry to say but you bought a receiver that only offers 7 channels of amplification and no rca preouts to add external amplification for all the Atmos channels.

I was looking at running it in a 5.1.2 setup and am not sure if that is the best option. I believe the biggest issue is going to be my vaulted ceiling

You will not be able to put in ceiling speakers in to a vaulted ceiling, the cavity needed for the driver assembly was taken for the vaulted ceiling.

I would recommend 7 channel surround over front height. It will create a more immersive experience especially in an open living room. You can easily buy 2-way speakers that can mount with a bracket on the ceiling allowing them to tilt down to the listening position.

There is nothing obvious about the receiver that would indicate that it is weak or poor in performance. I would probably go through a manual setup instead of a automatic setup to see if you are happier with your results. Sometimes the auto-setups can be underwhelming for some people. If there is nothing in the manual that indicates that you can't set the speakers to small, then it must be locked out due to some automatic settings. It is an inexpensive unit, but not from a shoddy brand and they have experience for sure.

Thank you for the advice, I purchased a def tech cs9040 center channel, 2 def tech studio monitor 55s for fronts and 4 studio monitor 45s for surround with a klipsch reference 10" sub. Hopefully it all works out and sounds good when done

For the money Deftech makes pretty decent speakers. I had the SM55's for my mains for a while (son has them now) and I was pretty happy with them. You will probably hear about the way the fudge some of their specs, which they do, but I feel they still make pretty good speakers.

I've only heard them in a showroom and of course they can make a pair of earbuds sound good in there, but all def tech reviews seem to be very good except for the subs which people say are to small, get over powered easily and way to expensive.

Subs are definitely not their forté. You definitely want to shop elsewhere for a good sub(s).

Unless you plan to upgrade, try to get the same one you have now. Mixing a big one with a smaller one still limits you to the smaller one's capabilities.

It would be the same sub, all the speakers are def tech minus the sub which is klipsch. I don't think the sub matters as much as the rest as far as matching. That being said I will not mix brands or sizes of subs due to wanting the best sound I can afford with easiest setup. I believe that having matched fronts, center, surrounds and height if you have them are the most important thing as well as the center being highest of quality. Let's face it most of the time you can't hear the dialog because the center channel is skimped on by so many people, the center channel is the most important piece of the home theater in my opinion.

Or even better, another SM55 if you have the room would be ideal. I pretty much agree with you on all points, though if I had to mix and match it'd be the surrounds. I recently added to the family so now my speakers are all matching.

I was using Deftech Promonitor 1000s as my surround speakers for years before I got my towers.

did you turn off the lfe channel? this will tell your receiver to make your front left and right channels full range since there is no lfe. at least this is the case on my reciever.

I believe that issue is resolved, right now I'm running 5.1 waiting on brackets to arrive to hang 2 more back height speaker for 7.1 the problem I'm having now and pioneer hasn't responded to my email but I can't figure out how to connect my iPhone to the front USB. It tells me something like no storage. Not exactly sure what the problem is or how to correct it. There isn't much online about this receiver, maybe I should have bought a denon like I was originally going to do.

The manual indicates on pg 47 you can play your iphone via wifi/airplay. Probably the usb is meant for a usb mass storage device but I didn't look further in the manual....

Thank you I will look more into it as well, my wifi at home is pretty crappy at best living in the country makes some of the conveniences of life a pain

Even if your internet speed is slow that shouldn't affect things within your own wifi network very much, at least it doesn't for me. I live in the boonies myself, best service at this time is DSL 6 to 7 Mpbs download....mostly. I'd have to root my android phone to convert it to a usb mass storage device to enable general usb connectivity, so I just stream it instead (but am android/pc, no apple).

Thank you for the info about the USB, yeah our internet is pretty bad only 2 options and both are about the same. Can't even get DIRECTV or DISH for internet
