What would you recommend for an 18 by 20 room? Do y'all recommend two of the same size or maybe two different sized crossed over a little different. Right now I have a 12 and a 10 the 12 is getting more of the deeper bass (80) and the 10 is crossed over a little higher (150) for the more punchier bass.
Your system is only as good as your weakest link, which for you in the bass department is the 10" sub. Ideally you want a matching pair from the same company. At the very least subs with similar performance specs.

How do you have yours placed?
Right now I have one in the front about 3ft off of my side wall almost under my TV with the rear port firing against the front wall (about 11 oclock from seating position) and the other is against rear wall about 4 ft right of me (bout 4 oclock seating position)
Seating position being 6 oclock

Right now basically I'm using the crossover on the back of the 12 also at about 80

Does your receiver have bass management? I wouldn't use the subwoofer's crossover unless I had no choice. That has little bearing on your sub situation as far as the 10 being your weak link tho.

You mean low pass filter on the sub is also being employed as well as that provided by the avr? I wouldn't employ both the sub and avr filters together, use the LFE setting if it has one or just max out the low pass filter on the sub.

I am basically letting the 10 inch sub handle everything 120 and down at a little lower volume level and the 12 is handling everything 80 and down at a touch higher volume level... basically it's just letting the 12 do more of the low-end work.. both subs are getting the same frequency from the AVRs bass Management. I'm just cutting it off with the 12 inch sub so that it can do more of the low in work. The low-pass filter is maxed out on the 10 but on the 12th I'm cutting it at 80 so that it's not so boomy at a little higher level..
It's all about getting the frequencies you need at the level you want, right?
This is also another reason why I'm more than likely going to upgrade here shortly..lol

Sounds a little like hillbilly engine-ear-ring. (sorry, I just thought that one up and got a kick out of it) :p

To me that sounds kind of wonky, but I dont know what it sounds like in your room. It could be awesome, but it's not very common to mix subs and mix crossovers unless you have one set up as a mid bass module. I'd say start over with subs or at the very least buy a matching 12" to compliment your other one and either repurpose, sell or toss the 10.

That's what I'd do, but everyone is different.

I don't think it's doing what you think it's doing....

How do you have your (subs) setup right now? Have you played with the q control?
Both ports open?
What settings have you found best for movie listening?

Kinda depends. If there's a movie I'm watching that's known for very deep bass I'll plug 1 port and go with eq1. For music I run them with 2 ports open eq2. I have few songs that do much below 25 hz and I like the headroom.
I've never messed with the Q setting. I set it at .7 to calibrate and haven't really played with it yet.

Thought that for music ported with all ports closed are better for more accurate reproduction, no? To allow drivers to return quicker to the initial position after low end peaks to avoid bumming.

After running the audyssey program, is it normal to have to put 5 to 8 db back in the subs to really be able to hear them good?
I know this is a preference thing but even after I sit the bookshelves on small and cross them at 80 , I still have to turn the subs up a good bit to really get everything I'm looking for out of them.
I bet Audyssey got the sub level correct. You should NEVER hear a sub. It should be seamless and no one should ever be aware of its presence. I find subs are turned up too high very frequently, in fact more often than not.

Part of this is compensation for inadequate speakers. I do not subscribe to the view that bookshelves and subs gives a comparable experience to capable speakers and a sub or subs. Better is full range speakers that require no subs, but this is seldom practical for most. Most of the program that is perceived as bass is actually well above sub range. Good bookshelves will only deliver this in the smallest of rooms. This is the number one reason why people turn up the subs.

The other reason is that "I paid good money for these subs and I jolly well want to hear them!"

I agree 100 percent with the "full range" is better.. Its just dissappointing that a set of full-range speakers capable of reproducing those hertz will have you refinancing your house..lol
Therefore the average do-it-yourselfer on a budget doesn't have a choice but to go with decent bookshelves and a good sub so they flow seamless, with the capability to Rattle the floor joist if wanted at times. Lol

I prefer the headroom with having both ports open. 1 port open, eq1 is the deepest bass extension mode. I tried them sealed and they just didn't do as well for me. I'm beginning to realize that I like me some bass.
