Question about surround sound speakers

I have a pair of surround sound speakers but I lost one so I only have 3/4. What is the best way to set them in a small living room (probably 15x15). I have a denon S920W

You mean only 3 surrounds or only 3 speakers total? If only 3, then 3.1 with all 3 up front. If only 3 surrounds, then I'd just leave one out since I am not sure that AVR supports 6.1 anymore.

Sounds like a smallish room for a 7ch system as well, I'd probably also just eliminate one surround. Were you going with side and rear surrounds or ?

Yes definitely a small area, I was in a much larger when I bought my AVR and speakers, but lost one in my move. I was planning on doing 2 rear (unless you think side is better for some reason, the couch will be directly below the speakers if they are put in the rear), and was more or less just curious if its even worth putting the 3rd up.

Well, primary surrounds are side surrounds, not rear; rear only comes into play after side surrounds are in place and going from 5ch to 7ch. Couch directly below rear surrounds isn't a good spot, nor is your couch right up against the wall in general. I'd just use side surrounds...

Ok makes sense, unfortunately with the size of the room there is really no option on where to place the couch

I would avoid rear surrounds above the couch. Even in 5.1 you'll want to have the surrounds to the side but slightly behind. I'd stay with 5.1 and try to get the couch off the wall as much as you can. That can help with bass issues too.

Slightly behind what? Do you mean slightly more towards the back?

Yeah. Like this if you can.

Guess I can't find the one with 5.1 but it's still the same. Also imo 7.x should have around 5' behind the LP to be effective.
