need quick help you guys please

so I'm new to my receiver and i had a couple of questions i was hoping some of you guys can help me out


so before i used to have a pioneer 5.1 receiver and not to long ago a friend of mine let me have a

yamaha rx-a710 7.1 receiver and i set up all 7.1 channels


now my question is when ever i watch a blue ray movie on my ps4 for some reason i get the option to change my surround decoder from dolby pro or neo 6 etc. but once the movie cuts on it doesn't let me change it any more it just says straight


if a pause the movie then i can go back and forth changing options but once i start the movie again it says option not available and it just says straight ...


does that mean that I'm still on the previous setting i left it on for example pro iix

in my old receiver i was able to watch youtube on neo6 or what ever i wanted and now it doesn't let me


why is that? or am i doing something wrong.

or am i really getting the full effect.

for example yesterday i was watching xXx: Return of Xander Cage and it said 7.1 dolby atmos but i believe my receiver doesn't have atmos setting but i do have 7.1


i mean the movie sounded great all 7 speakers where sounding great and it wasn't sounding like stereo mode

i just wanted to make sure i was doing this correctly and I'm using my receiver and watching movies correctly

basically would like to know if my surround decoder is actually activated while watching a movie .


also if the movie is atmos 7.1 and i don't have atmos but do have 7.1 dolby true hd etc. what happens then ?


and i forgot to mention i do have my ps4 on my output settings to 7.1 channel and its also on dolby bitstream

Your surround decoder is activated during the movie. The AVR is only playing back the movie's sound mix. You might be able to engage certain types of processing on that, but I don't think you wantt to do that.

As long as your blu-ray player supports Dolby TrueHD, it will be able to play sound from Atmos discs. Same is true for DTS:X, so long as your system is able to play DTS-HD Master Audio tracks.

That is correct. In my opinion, it is best to leave it. I would stay away from those movie modes. All they do is add an EQ curve to the response and sometimes also adds a layer of reverb to the sound mix. It is very gimmicky and it sounds odd.

ok i see what about youtube say for example i want to watch a video trailer on youtube or a dolby trailer or so how can i get the full effect there

or it won't be possible ?

I also have a ps4 and there are three menus you need to check. First is ps4 sound, make sure it is set to bitstream, your preference on DTS vs Dobly or whatever your receiver supports. Next is the PS4 menu when inside of the movie play mode. Access this by pressing settings button on the controller while a movie is playing. Make sure it is set to bitstream (direct) . Finally on the blue ray audio menu make sure English 1, usually the best audio recording and it will tell you the format. (or in some cases you can choose between dobly atmos or DTS hd).

If your receiver is on surround decoder you should see whatever the audio soundtrack is displayed on your AVR. Straight should sound the same but I like seeing what I'm listening to.

It may be that the AVR will only allow surround processing like Neo 6 under certain signals like two-channel analog. Have you read through your receiver manual?

Atmos And DTS X are based off of their predisessors True HD and HD MA. Either one will adjust to those if the receiver is not comparable with the new format as far as I understand it.

Just checked the instructions for your AVR, you have it right when it's on the straight setting. If you want to change the display to show what decoder is playing you should be able to by pressing the "info" button on your remote.

i just noticed that earlier i pressed info while it was on straight while the movie was playing and it said dolby digital hd and it was on 7.1 witch the movie jack reacher that has dolby atmos



i just wish i can get a better effect while watching videos on youtube

when ever i watch videos on youtube or listen to music on spotify i just get a 2 channel setting

not even my subwoofer come on

Use a mode that incorporates the bass management/subwoofer rather than a direct type mode for 2.0 sources like youtube or spotify....there is no sub content in a straight 2.0 signal....
