Audyssey Calibration Microphone

The one that came with my Denon X1200W suddenly stopped seeing my speakers. As if it was unplugged. I can't see any damage to the cord and it doesn't look kinked or anything.

I've been using the one that came with my (now my son's) S510BT, which the dog chewed the cord in half when she was a pup. I spliced it back together and it still works, but it looks pretty ghetto and I don't know how accurate it is. It doesn't even look the same as the other mic.

Is there a one size fits all as far as these mics go, or are they dependant on specific avr brands or levels of Audyssey? I want to order a new one, but I want to make sure I get the right one.

Found this.

"It is important to use ONLY the microphone that is supplied with the Denon receiver as the calibration curve built into the receiver is specific to that microphone. It is also critical to point the microphone upwards and to place it at ear level. Any other microphone will have different characteristics and will not produce the correct results. Each model's microphone has different calibration curves and will not be interchangeable between models."

I'm on the phone with Denon right now. Looks like they might warranty it for me even though it's a AC4L refurb.

Yeah, I've read that too. Each mic is specific. Another reason I don't believe in using phone mics for important measurements.

Awesome! They're sending me a new one, free of charge. I was afraid that since it was an AC4L refurb purchase I'd be out of luck. The guy was nice about it too. Good customer service.

Now I'm curious to hear the difference if I've been using the wrong calibration mic for the last couple months...

There's really only a few different Audyssey mics (like 3 IIRC), especially different were the very oldest ones (puck style I believe, before my first Audyssey avr). I was gonna say check the mic jack for lint or something but if the other mic works....I think they're the same between those models.

Hey guys

Old tread but a quick question. If the mic is the same style like the taller thin silver colored on vs the shorter black one is long as you keep the style with each receiver it should be ok right??

I have all 3 style across the different receivers that I have and just got a used marantz with no mic. So I am hoping I can use the same style denon one with the marantz.

Thanks
Jeff

The same will hold true for the Marantz. Audessey on the Denon is calibrated to a specific mic. The Marantz will be calibrated to their mic. It's a roll of the dice as to whether the Denon mic will match the Marantz, unless you can find some testing on-line that shows that the two mics are equivalent. Room correction will run, but the results will not be guaranteed. You could try it and then tweak manually but could end up with a wacky curve. Best to get the Marantz mic.

Just contact Marantz and tell them which model you have. They were really helpful and sent me one free of charge.

Tho it might take a little more effort in these post covid times. I've been seeing more reports of folks having issues getting in touch with some of these companies.

That's good to know. By the way, the question about different mics have been discussed to the nth degree on avsforum, and from what I gathered from D+M and even Audyssey, they said they were specific to the model, but.. In fact there are only a few different part numbers (not counting the very old pre-Audyssey puck shape ones), but as long as you use the one with the same part# as your original one, it will be fine.

The one that came with the Denon AVR-X440H is ACM1HB, same as the one that came with my Marantz AV8801 that is a few years older. My AVR-4308CI (much older, year 2008?) has a different one, looked the same but much heavier, and has a different part number. What's the part# of yours?

That was my understanding too, that yes you need the right mic, but there are only 3 or 4 different ones and 1 mic might work with a half dozen different models. There's still a good chance you might get the wrong replacement tho so that's why I say call 'em. Could be the one he has is the right one tho.

Here is the mic I used today. I will play with it a bit later and see how it sounds. This mic is the one for my Denon x4000 (I think) and has the same shape as the one in the manual. Manual did not provide a mic model number.

I used a different one yesterday and I seemed to be quick bright on the treble side. I had not had that with my prior cheap Denon receiver.

I did put a call into Marantz today and never got my call returned. Will try again tomorrow.

What's the serial number on the bottom of the mic? Pretty sure we can look it up and match the right one. You said you have 3 of them?

Nevermind, the model number is in the image you posted. Quick Google search turned up a remote controller replacement site that lists all the models compatible with that mic.

Hmm. Thanks Pogre. I have Marantz NR 1607. Not on that list but wondering if those are all Denons.

Well it does show the 1509 and 1608 and some other Marantz. Interesting all the "compatible" Yamahas.

I just found a website stating that this remote is the replacement they sell. So I think I’m good. Plus my results on this calibration run yielded much better results.

Thanks for the help.

I have three of these from Onkyo and Denon and they look identical.

Onkyo is a ACM1HB just like the Denon. Interesting that the Onkyo isn't on the list.

Yeah my old Onkyo with Audyssey uses same mic too. Onkyo with Audyssey is probably off most people's radar, tho :)
