Sorry its been a while, but life got crazy as my kids baseball started up.

I finally ordered and received my Sub about a month and a half ago. It's even bigger than I expected and luckily it went into the basement or my wife would not have let it through the door!

So far...

I bought a calibrated mic and downloaded REW, but I haven't educated myself on how to use either one yet so I haven't really played around with the sub's settings very much. For the last couple of months I have had it on EQ2 with both ports open and the Q at 0.3. last night I closed a port and moved the Q to 0.5 and figure I will audition it like this for a bit, or maybe even use the mic I spent $100 on.

With the sub volume/gain at the 8 o'clock position MCACC puts the sub at -5db after running. I turn mine up to about the 12 o'clock position after I run MCACC, but I like a lot of bass. Thing I don't like about Pioneer receivers is it doesn't allow you to set the crossover for individual speakers or at least mine doesn't. So I have my crossover set at 80.

I'm curious to know what you are experiencing with yours and if you have any wisdom to pass.

Funny timing! I was going to check with you today to see if you'd gotten your sub yet.

Just curious, did you run MCACC with the sub set up as recommended in the manual: 1 port open, EQ1 and Q to 0.7? I set the sub up that way, set the sub volume/gain to about 9 o'clock (it may have been a little past 9) and MCACC set the sub at exactly 0. That wasn't near enough bass for me so I increased it to +5 (5db hot). Still not enough bass for me so I increased the gain/volume on the sub to somewhere between 11 and 11:30. Probably around 11:17. That was sounding MUCH more to my liking. I hadn't really heard or read about anyone doing it like that, so, me being the chicken I am with new stuff, I called HSU and discussed it with them. They said that it should be perfectly fine and to pretty much set it how I like it. I've got my crossover set to 80 also.

I started out using two ports open, EQ2, Q= 0.5 and really liked it. I've changed it a few times just to try it out and have always gone back. I'm sure I'll be trying out different settings for as long as I own it. My wife thinks I'm a little crazy but to to me, that's part of the fun!

I love the sub and can't imagine not having a beast like that ever again.

I upgraded my front speakers recently. Stayed with Klipsch but jumped up the their RP line (2- RP280F's L&R and an RP450C center) and the sub blends in with those perfectly too.

You'll have to let me know what you think of the mic and REW. I've heard nothing but good things about REW and have considered getting a mic and running that program, but I'm afraid I'll be too stupid to figure it out.

"Just to throw out some other experiences that I, as well as many of our customers, have had. We wound up setting up most of our variable tuning subs to EQ 2, 2 ports open. We were getting a good amount of room gain in the deeper bass, so even though we had our subs set to EQ 2, 2 ports open, the subs still played flat down to 15 Hz in room. Also setting it to two ports open allows it to give us more clean headroom and output, with a wider dynamic range. In one port open, there would have resulted in a good amount of boost in the low bass which would have made the material sound unnatural and boomy, with about the same extension. So which setting you go with ultimately depends on your room acoustics."

Another suggestion from Kevin to another poster was to flip them on their sides. I was playing around with aesthetics, so I tried it out. I didn't keep them like this, though I really do like how nice and clean it is. I'm just not sure if it looks 'right'. Maybe with the covers on and the feet removed..?

I've had them for just over a month and I'm still playing with them. You'll love yours. It's a notch up from mine. Congratulations!

You know I just realized that I hadn't been putting the Q to 0.7 when running MCACC. I will do that and run it again when I get home to see if it gets to zero. Did you actually physically close a port when you ran it?

My wife certainly thinks I'm nuts too. I'm sure we have a lot of company here and on AVS though. And I may be too dumb to figure out the mic and REW as well, but I'm going to give it the old college try nonetheless.

Hilarious you got those speakers. When I bought my speakers about 8 mos ago I was originally planning on almost the exact same LCR setup. I wanted the 280FA's though. I wasn't ever able to find a place to audition them and ended up going to a Magnolia and getting all Def Tech instead. Unfortunately I'm very impulsive which led to the abandonment of Klipsch and buying of the Def Techs. I am very pleased with them although I must admit I do day dream about what might have been and those pretty orange cones on the RP's from time to time. Lol

I like what you did with the TV to get your center channel on your stand. I had to do something similar with mine. I'll post a pic soon. What we do to make it work!

Hey man, no such thing as "right". 'Cept for what you like. Fwiw, I like the look on their sides. Looks cleaner with the horizontal line off the entertainment center to the subs. Like the grills off too... just not practical though.

Have you tried using just one vs two to see how much of a difference it makes? I imagine I'll eventually get a second at some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later!

Yep, I closed one of the ports with one of the dense foam plugs that came with the sub.

It's not real pretty, but it does the trick. When I retire from the Navy in a few years I am hoping I can finally build a room for my HT instead of the other way around

I know the speaker layout and wires everywhere aren't ideal, but it's the best I can do for now. Being in the military I move around often, and rent, which makes it tough to customize my setup like I would like. I just moved here 9 mos ago and am already moving again in a few months.

I plan on doing acoustic treatments and getting another sub if the next house will accommodate. Also plan on getting SR9080 for the sides, moving my side surrounds back to the rear and my rears to the top. So I will have 6 up top instead of the Atmos enabled speakers that sit on my towers for the top front. The back 2 are wired in series with the middle 2 until an affordable 9.2.6(or more)processor hits the market. So it's technically 7.3.4( I have a couple old near field subs until I can get another VTF15)

It is busy. Too busy!

At my old house I had a man cave in the garage where a lot of this stuff was and my living room was where my HT was. This wasn't possible in this house because of the open floor plan and vaulted ceilings in living room for HT and I needed to use the garage....well for a garage. So what you see is a combination of those two rooms. Next house I hope to separate them again. It looks more busy in the picture than it really is though.

I'm sure it helps having the crates out of there too but still. I'd be surprised if you could hear a different but hey, ya never know. My surround speakers have JBL logos that rotate. That would complete the orientation for you but you can't have everything. Lol. How's AZ?

ps: My sister needs some serious help with her audio. She has her surround speakers (from her HTIB) stuck in the couch cushions on either side of her.
