Now that I know you are heavily biased towards HT, I should bring up another option.
That is Klipsch. They are closing out some old inventory (or maybe they decided to do another production run and sell them cheap, who knows?) from their Reference series. You can get a pair of RB-61ii's for $330 via Amazon. Amazon gives you 30days to return and it is very easy and quicker than returning to the store assuming you have a UPS store nearby (just keep the packaging).

If you look around, you will see the RF-82ii for $360 ea. that is a great deal, but be aware that the standard Amazon return policy will not apply as these are 75 lbs each and the seller doesn't pay return freight.
The Klipsch don't get a lot of love around here, they have the reputation of being harsh and I experienced that on earlier models I heard in the 80's. I do not hear any harshness on the current RF series and higher (I have not listened to lower). The horn does have a unique effect. AH member, ATLAudio has spent the time adjusting the toe-in and spacing of his so as to eliminate the unrealistic aspect of that effect (I have heard this), but out of the box, you will likely experience the effect I am talking about. I don't recommend Klipsch without suggesting you listen in a $ risk free situation.
Between the high efficiency and the horn, they are fun and dynamic speakers for HT! Also, they are hard to beat for rock (for the same reasons) and maybe not ideal for mellowing out.
The best thing is to order a pair of the RB-61ii's and see what you think. These will play loud enough to follow you into a future scenario (assuming nothing extravagant in the way of large rooms). Don't be tempted to buy the RB-81ii. In theory, crossing from a 6" vs 8" woofer to the same tweeter is easier for the 6" because it can more readily play higher frequencies up to the tweeter crossover without beaming (or the tweeter doesn't have to attempt to play as low). I think the 8" buys another 5Hz on the bottom...it is not that much and with a sub that is wasted money.
Review and discussion of the RF-62ii and RF-82ii here (the RB-61ii relates to the RF-62ii similar to how the 170 relates to the 340) :

PS: The newer versions are not necessarily better than the old. I think they have numbers like FR-28 and FR-280 (instead of RF-82). I know one of these is a cheaper variant custom to Best Buy. The other may be essentially the same or have some minor tweak, but don't be quick to assume you should spend more money.
