SPL apps should have A and C weighting at least, though I haven't used one yet. I still have my old Ratshack analog one.

aint it grand? I have had that SPL meter from Radio Shack since it was leading edge audio technology. I used it with my very first home theater setup to balance the speakers. It still looks brand new today and still works as well as ever. I don't remember what I spent for it, but it was money well invested. If nothing else, I take it out and amaze the non-audio crowd with my measurement tool prowess.

McIntosh equipment still has the blue meters after all these years because people dig that bouncing needle !
The Radio Shack SPL is probably the only audio device I could afford with a working needle in it.
I certainly am not in the McIntosh spending category.

It has C or A weighting or none. I'll use this app and see if I can get the 75DB level measured.

The reference there being that the analog version of the Radioshack meter isn't made anymore, only the digital display one, though it is similarly priced. And AFAIK, Radioshack may only be online now? Not sure they have many, if any, stores.

you mean our old analog SPL's are now heirloom quality, vintage antiques?

I have the digital version, but it's at least 15 years old and works great. No dancing needle though...

Yes people love the needles. And of course those beautiful blue lights!!!

Also fwiw, not sure what OP is using for a device with the spl app, but I'd recommend not using a phone or tablet for accuracy.

At the moment all I have is an SPL meter app on my phone. The problem as I understand it is how to calibrate the app against some known reference sound source.
I can use the app to level set the L & R channels to the same reading but that is about it. no way to know if 75DB is really 75DB.

Well, it is more important to set them to the same level than exactly 75dB. You know the tone is 75dB, so take readings from the two speakers and level them to each other based on what the app reads and I think you'll be fine.
