We have an old portable speaker in our bathroom and it's seen better days. It never quite played loud enough either when the shower and fart fan were going.

I'd like to get decent portable Bluetooth speaker to replace it. Doesn't have to be battery powered, it'll be plugged into an outlet. Budget would be a hundred bucks or less. if there are some good 30-50 dollar options I'm all over it. I know nothing about portable Bluetooth speakers, who makes them or makes them well. It'll have to be loud enough to be heard over the shower and fan, and of course it'd be nice if it sounded good too.

I'd be tempted to convert a set of desktop pc speakers/sub. Some of those sound great. My son has a Bluetooth speaker and it sounds like crickets trying to escape out of a tin can.

I'd think about a diy project with a bluetooth amp board maybe....

This looks interesting but very little info on the actual speaker part, altho the smallish footprint and hands-free features might be nice for the bathroom....

Check out the audioholics 2016 product of the year. video. There is a bluetooth speaker for under 100 (sold on amazon) that I personally am considering.

Well I've seen the bluetooth amp boards at parts-express but never really dug into it, imagine there's probably a diy project there all spec'd out if you look around....might start browsing here http://www.parts-express.com/promo/new_bta_boards

Finally a question I can answer as a relative newb to this forum.
Last year (Dec 2015) one of my grandkids that's pretty tech savvy gave me an Insignia Bluetooth speaker. I didn't think much of it because I am set in my ways and quite frankly didn't think it was very useful or would sound good.

Wrong. This little rubber coated (yeah, its able to get wet without going nuts) bluetooth speaker is a lot of fun. It pairs well with just about everything. Portable. The battery lasts forever. It does have an AC dongle. And it sounds pretty darned good. When my home theater AVR went goofy one weekend, we paired this little speaker with a laptop and used it for temporary sound for the bigscreeen. It filled the gap.

$49 bucks. https://www.insigniaproducts.com/pdp/NS-SPBTBRICK-C/4388800

It aint an audiphile speaker. But, it fits the bill very nicely for what it is

To also answer, not only ask. I also have been curious about Bluetooth speakers, since I travel a lot, do a lot of hiking/camping, and a good audio with battery that can charge up the phone, when you dont have a electric socket anywhere near really sold me at that point. Since it was about 3+ years ago, there wasnt much to choose from, this was a beginning new trend. So i bought one, that I could actually get my hand on before, and listen to, it was amazing, for a portable speaker of course, so those little speakers connected together with some bluetooth board and a battery can really cheer a group up, when you are miles away from civilization.
This one was from the bit pricier range, but it traveled half of the world with me, and it still works as a charm.

Good luck with DIY project, it will certainly be interesting to do something like homemade bluetooth speaker.
