I gave both songs a listen diesel and you are correct in assuming that style is way outside my normal listening. my wife walked in and thought I'd lost my mind. lol

my experience is definitely limited on bagpipes, but I've never heard them played with such a blues feel before. it was interesting and I gotta say... kinda fun. it's good to go out of your comfort zone every once in a while. thanks for the suggestion.

did you really check it out? the pot is currently one of my favorite songs. their style can be pretty aggressive, but that's not what they hang their hat on. there's some funk, groove, complicated polyrythms and time signatures in a lot of their music. some experimental stuff too. I love that band.

Hey Pogre, just getting started with these guys and so far I'm liking and enjoying what I hear. Just listened to Pot and for sure I like it, been listening to there top 60 tracks and no doubt about it the funk & groove along with polyrythms grabs my ears and yes there cd's will be added in my music collection and hearing them on my system is sweet. My wife heard me playing them and said, I just know you didn't by more cd's?, which response was, Not yet but a store name CD Depot will be seeing me this week, great prices on new & use cd's and besides they know me due to helping them to pay bills, my last visit I asked the manager when's my name going on the front of store...

okay guys. everything sounds great and I'm really happy with my speakers now. what's going on now is my receiver is getting pretty hot when I crank the volume close to reference level (-10 or -15db) in stereo. I'm considering an amplifier for my front speakers. I don't think I need something with a crapload of power. maybe something with 150-200 wpc rms?

I have a denon avr x1200 and it has preouts. this is a whole new world for me and I have no idea where to start. from what little I do know, it looks like a crown xls series or a behringer might do what I want? crown xls is d class amplification, yes? should run a lot quieter?

I'm hitting the spl I like, or close to it, but I'm concerned about my avr getting hot. it's not untouchable, but not comfortable to leave your hand on it for too long. I did see where gene said these speakers are more 4 ohm speakers than the 8 they're supposed to be.

*edit: fwiw, I did download a couple of spl apps on my tablet, I'm sure they're not the most accurate, but they all give me about a max of 80-85db where I sit when I really turn it up. I used the spl calculator hd tosses out there sometimes and according to it, I should be hitting significantly higher spl.

in most circumstances 80-85db is plenty, but that's also when my avr starts cooking.

Be careful with your ears and new speakers if you add an amplifier and crank it up more because it's no longer getting hot. You can still damage both.

BTW, I have that album by Tool, "10,000 Days". I bought it the day of release and like playing it loud. If you like that, try the album from A Perfect Circle, "Mer De Noms". Keenan from Tool is on it.

Do you have video processing enabled on the Denon? That may be something to try turning off to reduce heat if you don't need it. A cooling fan is what I use when the unit doesn't have sufficient ventilation (look at your manual's requirements for free space around the avr). At -10 to -15 with subs shouldn't be an issue for your avr's power, especially with the spls you're reporting.

it's a denon avr x1200. I mentioned it in the post you quoted, but I get a little long winded sometimes. I could try a small fan. it's in a cubby with plenty of room behind and on either side, but not much on top. about an inch or inch and a half.

ken, I already have some significant hearing damage from... well, plain stupidity in my youth. I'm a lot more careful now. I don't listen at those volumes for sustained periods. I keep it down to a decent level until a favorite song pops up, then I turn it up for that song and turn it back down.

I'm very familiar with a perfect circle, puscifer and all things tool. I've been following the band for almost 2 decades and have all their music. I'm a huge fan. I think it's very cool you have one of their cd's. they're not for everyone, but they are very talented.

hd, I checked my settings and auto lip sync is on. is that even a necessary thing? aside from that I don't see much else to turn on or off under video. unless there are some default settings in another menu I haven't found yet. I'm pretty sure from reading the suggestions that I'm just not letting it breathe enough. I'm gonna try a small, quiet fan. much cheaper than a separate amp.

yeah. home Depot or Lowe's, either one. I went to depot and bought a large plank. they cut it free up to so many cuts then charge a little after that. you need a pretty good sized saw to get a good cut on a piece that thick. my neighbor has a saw that'll work, but the depot had a big rig all set up for it and it was much easier.

Built me some platforms for my TV. That way, I can put my center channel speaker on the top shelf. I also put very large door stoppers underneath to angle the center channel up even more. Even painted both the platforms and the door stoppers black. I think that it looks pretty good given that I am such an amateur....LOL!!!! Thanks for giving me the idea. It sure was cheaper than buying a new TV stand. Here are a few pics:

Have much more work to do. But, at least I am headed in the right direction. Does it look decent to you?

I like it! I think it looks natural and not rigged up at all. nice job. I have the door stopper thing going for my center as well.

Thanks Pogre. It actually has turned out better than I thought. Sure feels good not needing a new TV stand.....LOL!!!! There is nothing like saving some money. It is most appreciated.

ever try something like this ? I've used devices like that for laptops a while back. they're quiet and actually work pretty good for laptops. maybe lay it on top. the fans would draw heat up and out the top. just not sure if it would be enough.

Almost got one for one laptop that ran too warm when I literally used it on my lap.

It vents to the top of the unit? Seems strange for something you'd put underneath a laptop? The thing I like about the fan I linked earlier is it vents the warm air away from my avrs (to the rear) and is quiet enough not to be generally noticed; it's rated 22dB(A), how about the laptop one? What if you/it didn't turn on, would it keep heat in the avr even more so?

yeah, if it wasn't running it would actually insulate the unit. I'd put it on top, upside down. it would suck warm air up and it vents out its backside. they're really quiet and work pretty well. you bring up a good point though about when or if it's not running. that would make things worse. I was just curious if it had been thought of or tried.

22db is pretty quiet. I don't think I'd even hear it over the tv and for sure not over music. I think ima go that route. price is right too.

Agreed, I would certainly try to get better air circulation before spending the $ for an amp.

My Pio Elite, I only have about 3 inches above it and maybe 6 inches on either side, and it's fine, but I'm also running GE T2 speakers.

Sorry for the bump guys, but I just moved some stuff around to sweeten up the sweet spot. I got everything all spit shined up and took some pics. I'm so happy with the results that I wanted to post a little speaker porn.

What I did was shift the main seating position a little more to to the left and closer to the speakers/tv. Then I moved the speakers/tv closer to the main listening spot. In total I'm almost 2 feet closer to the front stage and more in the middle of the room. This totally changed the sweet spot for my bass. I was able to get both subs up front and everything looks a little more symmetrical now. I also have better bass response at my seat now too.

This took me the better part of an afternoon and I couldn't be happier. I feel like I upgraded again and all I did was play with positioning.
