Compatibility between Dayton Audio 1500 SUB and Pioneer SP-BS22's

What does one look for when trying to match bookshelf's with a Sub?

Thanks!
Of course, you should be concerned about the quality of the individual components, but, aside from that about the only real concern is that the crossover point can be met by both the speakers and the sub. With any normal bookshelf speakers that is not much of a concern because almost every sub made can support a 80Hz or 100Hz crossover point.
However if you had some of the mini-cube-satellite speakers which cannot play well at lower frequencies, you would need to worry about whether you sub could properly cover the mid-bass that those tiny speakers cannot! The SUB-1500 spec's 140Hz as it's upper limit, and if you had satellite speakers with 170 Hz as their lower limit, you would have a "hole" in your frequency response between 140 and 170.

Wow that looks really nice, I'd have to say it's a bit of an overkill for me though. Perhaps I came to the wrong forum . I don't actually have much to connect to the receiver, just looking to power the SP-BS22's at this point and have a remote. Is this Insignia NS-STR514 ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-200w-2-0-ch-stereo-receiver-black/4156007.p?skuId=4156007 ) a lame choice?

Thanks KEW, I'd kinda vaguely assumed that from someone's previous comment. However, your frequency examples really drove the point home.

Radio tuner isn't important at all really, thanks for the suggestion. I'll also try and understand a bit more about bass management before I ask again.
Bass management is providing a crossover between speaker and sub....or better yet multiple crossover point options.....many subs at best offer only a low pass filter....i.e. without a high pass filter for your speakers so ss not to duplicate frequencies being handled by both speaker and sub....

Relating that feature to a receiver, I should look for high pass filter in the specs?

And I should also look for the ability to set speaker crossovers in varying frequencies and "small" or "large" settings so as to send LFE only to the sub right, or would that be redundant?

One last thing, how important is receiver wattage, would 30 watts-per-channel, measured from 20Hz to 20kHz, 2-channels driven, 8 ohms, .09% THD be okay for small room?

Get one of these. I just bought one and love it. Take 2 weeks, but worth it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231799451860?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

High pass filter probably wouldn't be mentioned. A subwoofer pre-out presence doesn't tell you it has any bass management. Evidence of ability to set speakers to small/large (in plain English that only means use bass management/don't use bass management for the given speaker/speakers) or crossovers would be good.

The amp/power needed would relate to your speakers' sensitivity rating, their impedance and the spl you require at what distance.

Wait, so would I just connect the amp to the high level input channels on the sub, and the speakers at the high level output and thats it?
Yep just connect your amp speaker wire to the 1500 then wires from the speaker to the 1500 then adjust vol/gain(1 or 2 o'clock dial) on the bass(1500) with a music CD simple as that. I have the 1200 Dayton, so it's basically the same setup. You can PM me and I can guide you if you want. For a cheap amp it's powerful.
