Beginner needs help: In ceiling speakers

Hi all,

I just brought a house with 4 existing in ceiling speakers. Two in front are larger than 2 in rear. I know that they worked because the owner demo for me. Now that he moved out and we getting ready to move in, I need some help with the wires. I noticed today that there are 6 sets of black and red wires coming out of wall but there are only 4 speakers... I thought there would only he 4 sets, one for each speaker. I text the owner and he said 2 of the sets are not used... from his memory. He is also not tech savvy about speakers and did not have owners manual... any idea why there are 6 sets of wires but 4 speakers? Maybe he is right that 2 sets are not used?

Most likely extra wire or ready for another speaker in the ceiling.

You may want to try and remove each speakers and see if there is an extra set up there ready to be relocated.

What is your goal for those speakers? What did the previous owner use them for and how did he connect them?
How did it sound to you having sound emanating from the ceiling?

Hi, thanks for the reply. The previous owner connected them to a receiver I believe, he just used it as regular home entertainment system setup, nothing special. I don't see why he would have 2 extra sets of wires ready in case he wants to add more speakers... doesn't make sense.... my goal is to set them up so they work, I need to get a receiver and a subwoofer tho.

Why does it not make sense for the previous owner to put in extra wiring in case he wanted to add more speakers at a later date? Because he ultimately didn’t?

Not a big deal though. When you get your receiver just connect the wires one at a time. You’ll get sound from the four of them that are connected to the speakers, and nothing from the wires that aren’t.

Thanks... I will test with 9v battery to see what wires belong to what speaker, and which 2 sets are blanks...

If you are in contact with that owner, ask him why 6 pairs. If he did it or who did it and when.
Maybe the person who did the wiring may still be around?

If u have plans to use the other connections, why not test them , if not secure them, weather there connected or not won't have impact on your current connections...Enjoy
