helping me find hdmi outs/yamaha rx-v679/crossovers

picked up a new Yamaha rx679 receiver last week. put it and the subs in our master bedroom mids and highs are nice, sub is so boomy and nasty sounding since in its a square now. truly unbelievable, mk5hp coming next. the f12/psw505 combo actually sound ok the in huge living room with all the angles. well, it sounds ok to me. anyway, I have questions.

So I have a 2013 Toshiba tv I am trying to run this into.. but it has no hmdi outs. 3 ins, no outs. I also have a ps3 to use (poop I just thought to check it for hdmi outs... it has one, but still no way to bring on the yamaha menus). anyway, to make short stories long, we are using rcas for the tv and I can't access the menu on my Yamaha to adjust the crossovers. I think I need to have the tv hooked up via hmdi to access it. that's what it seems like reading the manual. The tv has a digital audio out but a toslink cable isn't fitting, for sure. can't tell if its broken or different than toslink. in dire need so I'm not playing full range through my cheap towers (Monitor 60's...I like them though.. ignorance is bliss I guess).

oh, the mids and highs sound so much better. I'm guessing room gain and the fact that the speakers are 12 feet apart in a 17 foot room vs 4 feet apart in a 30x20room. thanks

edit: the TV has a digital audio out but a toslink doesn't fit. it's broken I suppose. toslink has been fine for me before. We had our tv repaired under warranty and that could have done it. could I get that replaced for 50$ or so. using rcas for sound on movies and it's not right! using computer and hdmi for music.. which sounds great. is my tv just done for? can I not use hdmi or at least toslink so I can access the yamaha menus? THANK YOU!

I'd only feed a video signal to the tv from the avr via hdmi, connect all other sources to the receiver....so the toslink out did work before? They broke your tv doing repairs? Post up your tv model number, tho.

ya we had to use a toslink to connect the living room; the applications in our smart t.v. had no sound without it. In our bedroom the toslink fits into the receiver, but falls right out when you try to connect it. This t.v. has been repaired 2x and I am not sure if that could have caused this problem.

There are zero hdmi outs and I would like to hdmi or at minimum find a better solution that the AV cables I am currently running. I really feel like there is something we don't understand.

t.v.: Toshiba/ Model: 39L1350U

Looks like your tv can output audio digitally only thru the optical connection, otherwise looks like you're stuck with analog. Look at pages 30 and 56 of your manual for connections for hdmi sources. Maybe you should get the optical jack replaced, shouldn't be too horrible especially if they broke it....

You are connecting sources now to the avr? If not, why?

So do I have to have the rx679 hooked up digitally to use the onscreen interface? Can I adjust the crossovers without a tv to play hdmi? For example, I have a laptop I am streaming spotify premiem, with the enhancer it sounds fantastic in here. However, I have to keep dance genres down due to the towers clearly running full range. Sounds like the subs are crossed high too. At least 100hz.

So, can I change my crossovers in any fashion without using on screen interface? And can that only be used with a tv? The computer being used to output hdmi to the receiver is an Asus pt2001. I don't understand why this cannot access the on screen interface. Thank you.

Some avrs do require the tv connected via hdmi for its GUI, what does the avr manual say? Have you tried using the wifi control with a smartphone or tablet? You'll need to check the settings in your avr for crossovers (and whether you are setup to use bass management or not....did you set your speakers to "large", i.e. to not use bass management?).

Sorry for the kind of double post above lol.. I was using my phone. anyway, yea i've read my manual and seems to indicate that I can only access the crossovers using hdmi tv.... not even toslink. which btw I hope to god our smart tv has an hdmi out, wait.......... nope. fantastic. could I buy another ps3 or ps4? should I get a new tv? call yamaha to make sure? this is driving me crazy not being able to set the crossovers. this is for 90% music, if I had no wife I would have just got the s-500 amplifier. I don't watch movies or tv. some online news but that's it. SO, I need to set these crossovers and I can just run it through my pt2001 and we can live with rcas for movie quality... for now. suggestions?

Edit:
Another question: Why are there 2 hdmi out ports on the back of my receiver? What I am really asking is if it is possible to use an hdmi out from my receiver to connect it to my t.v.? As I have probably already stated my end goal is to access the gui screen for the receiver to set my crossovers.

2 hdmi outs on the avr would be to accommodate both a tv and a projector as an example. Why you are not using hdmi to connect your avr to your tv now I don't understand, and you would easily be able to use the avr's gui that way.

I was mistaken and only had arc. However, got access to the menus, and to celebrate I just ordered a Hsu vtf3 mk5. Better beat the pants, and I mean it.... Out of a bicf12/psw505 set up. Should I celebrate or have apprehension in your mind? 90% music with half dance/dnb and half punk rock and 3rd wave ska. 10% movies.

What you were mistaken about....you had ARC capabilities all along? I don't remember seeing ARC capabilities in the TV's specs....

Always a fan of better subwoofage and the Hsu is certainly better than what you've currently got....

I dunno. I just plugged an hdmi from arc to hdmi in on the tv. It doesn't say arc or anything.

I did wonder if the tvs HDMI-CEC might work. Did you just pick port 1 on your tv (on my Samsung ARC is port 2)

I have a Yamaha RX-V375 AVR, and I can access the menus using the display on the front of the AVR. I do it often. Good luck. Peace and goodwill.
