HI,

I was thinking about putting some speakers into a box!

as in making a decorative box with a front grill to put an
existing speaker into purely for aesthetics

is it a done thing? what are the consequences?

Thanks in advance

One fun thing you can try is to attach a funnel to the bass reflex port of your speaker, making sure the edges are good and sealed against the cabinet around the port. Then attach a kazoo to the other end of the funnel. Play something bass heavy and let the good times roll.

Well, the funnel can be plastic if you wish. After all, the vent within the speaker cabinet is probably either PVC or a used firework. But yeah, a metal kazoo will probably offer better resonance I think. If you don't have one, you could try a squeaker from a dog toy.
