Fortunately no major injuries. She's just sore in the neck/shoulder/lower back. I'm really glad it wasn't worse.

She was on her way to work, driving south on 35W in the right lane, and some douche in the left lane decided to merge his truck into her car. Did plenty of damage to the left/front side of her vehicle. She pulled over and fortunately he did as well. However, that's the only time he did the right thing. He did not get out to check on her or to exchange information. He did speak to the police when they arrived, but he probably lied and told them she hit him. We'll see how the insurance handles it.

I am of course really glad that she's not severely injured. She and I are bummed because her car is old and has seen a lot of miles. Insurance will probably total it. We just closed on our house last week and having another car payment was not in the plans. I really hope that guy owned up to his mistake and told the cops the truth.

I'm also glad to hear she's OK :).

Cars are material things, and even though we might love them, they can't love us back. They, however, can be replaced. People, on the other hand, can't be so easily replaced.

That really sucks. That he stopped is good. Going to guess he didn't fess up. Good luck, sounds like it may be on your side though because he was ahead of her moving right. Glad she's not seriously injured.

Hopefully he was just too embarrassed and did the right thing. If you got the cash you could get a used Mazda 3 on the cheap. They are very reliable, with plenty available in the area. Just take it to your mechanic to inspect it for issues and you should be fine.

Glad she's all right. Thankfully, you've got insurance.

Cars can be replaced, Lives can't.

I'm disappointed to see that Texas has ashhole drivers. I was hoping I left them all back in Jersey.

Unfortunately not, but we also have plenty of very honest people too. I had my car break down on me a few years ago and a person I didn't even know lent me his extra truck after helping me out in the parking lot.

Thanks everybody. I am definitely glad that she's ok and of course the car can be replaced. It's just something we'll have to deal with. Hopefully it's considered repairable and we can just get the car back. If not, we'll start doing some research :)

Ask for the police report.
We have been. Unfortunately the officers have five business days to complete and file the report. There is also a $6 fee to get the report for whatever reason. USAA is usually pretty good so hopefully they continue that trend and we get this resolved quickly and without anything out of pocket other than the police report fee.

Phillip, I am very glad your wife is not seriously injured. Things can change in the blink of an eye. YOU both can stand your ground with the insurance company. Had an old car albeit a Cadillac totaled years ago. Someone backed into me. There was practically no damage to my Cadillac. But, the insurance company totaled it out. I worked out a deal with them and took a little less on the claim. Then, I got to keep the car. It can be done. Best wishes to you both!

Cheers,

Phil

A little late checking in, but I am glad no one was hurt.
Don't worry too much about where fault will fall. Police see people make up stories of what happened all of the time, but with experience, they can almost always tell what happened just from looking at where the damage is on the vehicles.

Still, have her take a day off from work and sit and enjoy some home theater!

Sorry, Phillip. Really glad she's OK. Don't let her sign any papers saying she wasn't hurt yet. Give her a couple weeks first. Sometimes back/neck injuries can take a few days to really start hurting.

The other guy wouldn't get out of his truck? That seems strange. Real strange. Who wouldn't get out to check the other person and observe the damage? Something doesn't add up.

I am glad she is OK.

I wouldn't get out of my car anywhere on I35 and I have given my wife the same instructions. I don't care if she is in a wreck or has a flat or is being pulled over for speeding. She is to drive to the next exit and get off the road.

I have personally seen two people get out of the car on 35 and get struck and killed.

Let me know if you need my Mercedes or Audi dealer's cell number. It's just money, you can make more....

Glad she's ok. Sucks that you lose a paid for car. I had that happen 2.5 years ago. Lost a perfectly good car that was paid for. No one seriously hurt but totaled my car.

I don't blame you for having her not get out in I35. That's a mess down there.

But you have to deal with the pain of dealing with insurance, getting a replacement, etc.

Thanks. Yeah, I think the guy was a big jerk. I don't know why he didn't get out.

Thanks. I know 35 mostly sucks since we live right by it, but there was plenty of room for him to get out and check on her because I did. I got there very quickly. I parked on the shoulder right in front of the guy and easily had 5 or 6 ft clearance between my car and the road and 3-4 ft to the concrete barrier on the right. He had room. He did get out of his truck to move an orange barrel so he could pull back out onto the highway after the cops told him he could go, but he never made eye contact with us. I did not see if they gave him a citation.

The next exits were for the NTE (820E/183), 820W, and 820E. Every exit there is for another highway and/or full of congestion and construction. No real good places to exit to share info. It was nice that there was actually a large shoulder available for once.

Mercedes and Audi are definitely out of our price range :) However, I did want to ask if you knew any solid but affordable flooring sellers because we're wanting to rip out our carpet and buy some laminate or something.

So my other life rule is to never get on 35...

I think you should save your money and keep the floors until you get a new car:(

lol. I wish we could avoid 35W but that's the best option for us most of the time.

We will of course wait until we get confirmation about the vehicle's status before we spend any major money. If we have to buy another car, we will. We still need to rip out the ~14 year old carpet sooner rather than later :/
