Rough year for all of us that were around for more than a few decades. All the icons we grew up with are leaving us.

I want to see hard evidence that he hated white people. That means something he definitely said that was recorded, or something he wrote.

He has said some harsh things about white people at one point but later changed his views and recanted. I wouldn't blame him for slamming whites- growing up when he did, where he did, whites did not treat blacks well. You try growing up black in Kentucky in the 40s and 50s.

To me he was more than a boxer. He was humorous. He had compassion for the common people. Man he meant alot more than that to me as a kid he was an inspiration. He always stayed true to his words. Like Presley he was poor and became a big superstar and still stayed humble. Him playing off the press in a smart funny engaging way made me smile. So much love for him and his family. A True Hero. I think that is what first made me like him. If I remember correctly, right after he first beat Sonny Liston and won his first heavy weight championship in 1964, he was being interviewed by the press. There was a mob of all the old-school boxing reporters, the same ones who had criticized him so much before the fight. Ali stole the microphone, climbed up on a table and returned all their verbal abuse as only he could. He refused to answer any questions until all those reporters chanted over and over "You're the Greatest!", or something close to that. It was hilarious. I could be wrong as to when that happened, it may have been after the Liston rematch. I would love it if someone could find a clip of that scene. I clearly remember seeing that on TV after one of those early fights.

Yes he was much more than a good boxer, he outwitted all the wiseguys in the press.

He stood up for what he believed in to the Masters of War no less. Not many athletes would do that then or now. That's why he was the greatest.
