I just bought a pioneer sx 434. Will 4th gen Bose 141s work well with it?

Those speakers are powered. If the receiver your ordered has preouts you might be able to make it work. If your receiver does not have pre outs, and only the top end models do, you are SOL.

Are you sure? I just plugged them in with speaker cable to my Yamaha integrated amp with speaker wire. They have binding things on the back where the cable goes. They don't have an external power source at all. Just require the speaker wire to be plugged into either a or b inputs and to the speakers... Thosse look exactly like mine though.

I don't know what series speakers these are but if yours is like these, then yes, you can connect these to your receiver. As to the sound, they will sound like the speakers and this is true for any receiver/speaker combination. They contribute virtually nothing to the overall sound of the system.

I'm not sure what speakers TLS guy is thinking about but, yes, powered speakers won't work with your receiver, unless they have speaker level inputs, which would be redundant..

Thank you for clarifying that. I know there not great but I like them. Would polk tsi 100s be better. The amp is 15 watts per channel. The polks say recommended wattage 20-100. would it be safe to use them on this? Ive always liked polk audio stuff.

Polk TSI is a very average speaker, so I don't think they will be much better than what you have. 15W should be plenty for either of them, just don't expect room filling sound from 15W and don't crank it too loud. If it sounds "unclear" or "muddy" then you're pushing it too hard for that 15W.

What's your budget for speakers? We can likely make some good, inexpensive recommendations.

IMO, for Polk, their vintage stuff is significantly better than their current stuff until you get to the LSi-M line, but speakers are definitely a personal preference so listening different ones helps. The ones listed here should be very neutral overall and work well with nearly every sort of music.

As for used stuff, it's impossible to tell you what you can get for your price range. It varies from day to day, moment to moment, geographical area to geographical area and what the seller is asking.

It's more effective if you look to see what's available where you, or on epay or craigslist, are and let us know what you find. We'll advise you from there.

Used can be a good option, but as mark mentioned, it is tough to make recommendations without knowing what's in your area. The side note on used is that's easier if you know what you're looking for.

I prefer a warmer sound with descent base. I don't use a sub. I also like crisp clean highs but not ear piercing and screechy.

When looking used, you don't really have much choice in the matter. You can't order them from a catalog.

Understand, with 15 watts per channel you may be somewhat limited. Back when this was made, watts were more expensive and speakers were generally large and efficient which means you get a lot of sound from a few watts. Nowadays, watts are cheap and small, inefficient speakers are the norm.

So, if you're looking vintage, a good rule of thumb is to check out large speakers.

As for todays smaller, less efficient speakers, be wary. They may not perform to their maximum potential.
