Hello,

I want to make sure my local night club isn't too loud to damage my hearing. What noise level meter should I get? If I understand correctly, it needs to have dB(A) weighting. What frequency range does it need?

It needs to be compact, cost less than 80€ and can be bought/ordered from Europe.

Thank you for your answers.

Cheers

it hurts your ears...it is too loud. If you cannot carry on a conversation with the person next to you without shouting at the top of your voice...it is too loud. If your ears ring after you leave...it is too loud. If in doubt...wear ear plugs or don't go.

For just checking out a club's noise level I'd think even a phone app (maybe with an external mic) might be helpful....but carrying the usual sound meter shape in your pocket might yield some interesting conversations ;)

If you have to wonder if your nightclub is damaging your, that pretty much guarantees that it is. Most SPL meters will reassure you of that, and I would use C-weighting to see the SPL you are being exposed to. If your nightclub is loud and you want to preserve your hearing, you can not go in it for any longer than a few moments. Many of the clubs and bars around me are waaaay too loud for more than a few minutes of exposure, all these people just blowing away their hearing. I am sorry to give you this ultimatum, but you can have fun in the clubs, or you can have healthy hearing, but you can not have both.

Get a smart phone app. It will be good enough. But as everyone has said, there isn't a Nightclub invented yet that isn't too loud. Get some ear plugs or be ready to suffer hearing loss well before fifty. Ask me how i know.....

Android has an app called 'sound meter' that works really well! So well, I calibrated my HT system with it with great results. I tend to agree with most folks here that most clubs are too loud. Bar bands are way too loud as well. As a result, I don't go to clubs anymore because my 52 year old ears can't take it.
