Thanks Alex. Are the BOOM mics expensive? It looks to be. Will read up on it when I have the time.

Cheers,

Phil
$20 from BH photo, $10 from ebay. BH is a little bit better quality. Just be aware you may need an attachment in order to connect the Audyssey mic unless you want to zip tie it to the boom.

One the one hand it is easier than a camera tripod, but on the other hand, with the boom it's a pain to try and level. Even though it takes an extra 45 seconds per mic position, I know the mic is leveled with a tripod (because of the bubble levels)

I see. Really like the bubble level on my tri-pod. Did not know the BOOM mic did NOT have a level. Thanks Alex for the info. Will try to read up on it some more. Have a good day.

Amazingly I can agree with what has been said by everyone so far.:D I have run Audyssey numerous times and found following the Audyssey website's instructions and recommendations, in this case fuzz's suggested position would be it, would yield the flattest REW plots in the primary listening positions.

Right, I have plenty of headroom no doubt. When level matching to 75 db, the gain knob is barely at the 9:00 position. Just increased the levels via my Denon AVR and NOT on the sub's gain. BTW, what is a BOOM mic? I am all about making things easier....LOL!!!!! :p:p:p:p

Sorry, just amended the post, meant to say boom mic stand. Got it free with something I bought at Parts-Express and while may not be the best, its functional for this. I found that the Audyssey mic isn't a good fit for the mic clip the stand utilizes, but if I screwed the Audyssey mic onto my mini tripod, the body of the mini tripod was perfect for the mic clip. My measurement mic also fits this clip, its body being of sufficient diameter. This stand but looks like it doesn't come with a clip.

Thanks Peng I was hoping that you would chime in. If not, I was going to send you a PM and get your thoughts. YOU have always been helpful to me anything regarding AVR's. Alex gave me a good pattern to follow. That is exactly what I will do next time. Hope to do that tomorrow. Right now, I am bushed!

No problem. Will look into the BOOM stand. Thanks for the info.

Once you get REW and the UMIK it'll be interesting to see how things look when you spread the mic positions out vs clustering them at your main seating position.

At one of my old places it actually gave a better measurement across all seating positions by clustering around the main LP vs spreading them out, but at the the place I'm in now, it works better to spread them out a little more.
Alex, could that be because your room that you are in now is larger? It would look like it should be fairly easy given that I only have (2) seating positions to be concerned with. Thanks for the pattern you laid out. Plan to re-run Audyssey today using how you outlined for me. Maybe get things sounding even better.

Phil

You could always use you head as the stand for the mic. Just don't flinch or you'll mess up the measurements.:D

Actually in terms of airspace the old place was probably "seen" as larger. The place I'm in is pretty air tight, the place I'm talking about was definitely not.

I think it had more to do with shape of the room and objects in it.

But, what if I have to sneeze......LOL???? That will certainly skew the results no doubt.....LOL!!!

Interesting. Just thought that maybe size may explain some of it. Never really thought about shape of the room. But, that is a very good point.

In all seriousness I think you would be fine with just a cardboard box. Or you could even just set it on the couch cushions.

I've found as long as I'm in the ballpark it really doesn't make a huge difference. Especially after a long day at work.

So very true. But, sometimes my OCD kicks in and I want the measurements to be perfect. Of course, nothing in life really is perfect. So, I just have to get over it and move on. Easier said than done, but I am working on it.

Can't u just pull the couch off the wall about 3 feet and use the back of the couch and then put it back

That could potentially change the acoustics of the LP and would make getting those two measurements pointless.

Not necessarily. If you have to sneeze, pinch your nose shut. Then the sneeze will blow out your ears, (stereo), and the affect to Audyssey will be cancelled.

Right right. The only problem is, one must be talented to do that....LOL!!!!! ;);););)
