Good Morning
Hope someone can help me I know nothing of this stuff and some of the terms are not even English to me.
I have a Samsung smart TV, Direct receiver and my son gave me a Yamaha receiver. I thought I hooked it up correctly but guess not. I have a second tv in the bedroom and now with everything hooked up I have to have the main tv on for the bedroom tv to work. Everything was fine until I put the yamaha into the loop. The Direct box goes to the yamaha and then out to the 2 televisions so no idea why the big tv has to be on for the bedroom to work.
Also the pic in the bedroom is not very good. House lod like me so needs new coax or HDMI cables thoughout but I was wondering if anyone uses a powerline to hookup remote TV's to satellite boxes.
My descriptions were probably not accurate but hopefully if someone can help I can answer questions to give you better idea of my problems
Thanks
Pam

What model Yamaha receiver do you have specifically?

So you're not using the multiple room solution of D* by having a receiver for each tv? Are you trying to avoid that? D* has internet and powerline solutions IIRC (I use an internet based one). Your receiver only has one hdmi out, so how do you have two tvs hooked up? An hdmi splitter? That's probably the issue. HDMI communicates with devices in the chain is a simple way to think about it so the details of the chain can dictate results...

ps sorry, D* is a usual abbreviation for DirecTV

from the back of the D* receiver i hooked up rca to coax that runs into the other room and tv. it does not go thru the yamaha or any hdmi cables. just rca to coax. it works for about 15 mins then the picture is lost and the tv says i have the wrong cable. if i leave the main tv on all nite then it works fine. seems like a waste of electricity to run the other tv tho. thought about running hdmi cable but that will be a big job. maybe there is a power line answer.

So just to be clear, you bought a single room solution from DirecTV but now you want it in two rooms? They offer a very simple, wireless solution for multi room applications. I have 3 TV's in my house, one dish and only one D* box is wired. They will even come out and hook it up for you.

I don't understand the RCA to Coax comment but if you are running to your primary TV via HDMI and your secondary via RCA, I can understand how your box is getting confused. Normally you only use one output type, not two.

So they've got it down to one master receiver now with a wifi solution for the balance? Last install I had I still had to have a receiver with each set. I do know D* isn't too friendly to bypassing their support of one tv at a time without paying....

Thanks for your help. These questions were for my brothers home when I sent him the posts he posted so it probably did not sound correct. He has 1 receiver in the house and 1 in the rv but pays for 2 receivers and 3 tv's so he is not cheating Direct. The RV receiver will not work with the dish on the house and the new receiver will not work with the old dish so that is confusing. The Direct service tech was out a couple of months ago and put in a new receiver so they are aware of his set up. It worked when the man left but started all this a couple of weeks later. He started messing with with the wiring when he got a new Yamaha receiver and tried to hook up all the satellite equipt. He is like me and all this new stuff is confusing but he not cheating Direct.
I am just trying to get the house set up. The house is old and has coax, old coax, so the HDMI gets mad and if the main tv is not on the bedroom tv will just show error. I have no idea why. He may have to get the direct man back out here. This house is all open beam ceiling so running a cable is a pain. I think he is using the rca out on the main tv to the coax in the house but it was working and just recently started this error message. He has powerline for extended wifi so trying to see if that is an alternative for the satellite tv also.
I am sorry for all the confusing info. Probably just best to get Direct out here again. Do not know if they can help with the Yamaha but have found a few $$$ helps the techs get things going.
Thanks again and sorry for the confusing posts. Hard to be old and trying to figure this new stuff out.

That's probably best to get D* back out there. They may even not charge if you get the right customer service agent. He should ask questions about the connections while they're there, maybe even take some notes, in case he needs to change or move something down the line. Good luck! I've been playing with audio/video stuff for a while and it indeed can be a bit of a learning curve these days!

I wasn't worried about you cheating D*, I don't care what you do with the equipment in your home. I was just pointing out they have a very good wireless system that will let you hook up multiple TV's with no cables and no wires. Works very well. Ask the D* tech to explain about their Genie package.

As for the Yamaha, they will want to hook up your D* directly to your TV and bypass your receiver. Then feed sound back to your receiver from your TV. That is how they always want to do it. But you can hook it up however you want.

The system in the RV is completely different and has totally different equipment. The two systems are not compatible at all.
