Can I trust this AVR?

Marantz 1506 - I see RAVE reviews, I know the name is legendary - it's in my budget

BUT

It's only 50W per channel. I like Boom, I like explosions. I have the 686 S2

Room is on the small side.

The alternative is the Yamaha 479 or Aventage.

thx

How big is your room (WHD)? Which speakers are you using? Do you have any subs?

50 watts is plenty for most setups and listeners. If you need more volume you probably need horn loaded speakers anyway.

Pretty much all of the 15xx models have preamp outs for the main channels so if it isn't enough, you can add an amp. At least two members have had issues with the 15xx "slim" receivers from Marantz though, so I'd actually say take a look at a full size Marantz or the Denon models that should be going on closeout soon.

We've used the Marantz NR series quite successfully in smaller rooms like yours. Keep in mind that you aren't going to get reference level here, but otherwise it will sound great.

What AVR would be better ? The Yamaha 479 or the NR ?
Would the 80W Yamaha get me reference ?

You keep referring to reference level. That's a level of loudness that's expressed in decibels.

Keep in mind that to gain a barely audible difference of three decibels a doubling of amplifier power.

to get an apparent doubling of loudness, or ten decibels, you need ten times the power.

Personally, I'd concentrate more on "loud enough for my tastes" than some arbitrary measurement you've only read about.

Wait about 2-3 months for Amazon to have their 50% off sale on current model Denon AVR when new models are released.

A Denon X3100 or X3200 should be about $500 (MSRP $1000).
