Im getting a pair of powered desktop speakers (probably Emotiva 5s) for my iMac. Is it worthwhile to use an external DAC in this situation for better sound quality?

Thanks,

No. I'd just get a minijack to RCA cable, and then a corresponding RCA to each speaker.

Thanks. I've read a number of sources that indicate the computer's DAC might be the weak point in the chain. Not sure if this was like spending $500 for 3 feet of wire or something more significant. Don't really have the chance to audition things. I see you can easily drop $100-500 on a small desktop DAC.

Don't spend money on DAC, unless you have issues to fix like hissing and cracking, while music is not playing. Fruit company product usually shipped with decent Dacs. And don't spend more than $15 on 3 feet of wire ever :)
