A warm hello from Pakistan

Dear guys keep up the good work.

After reading hundreds of threads and getting swift education, it was high time to join.

Please excuse me if this is not the right forum / section for posting it.

Please let me know which 5.1 system with sub woofer can i buy for $ 1,000.

My priority is clear sharp sounds.

I have seen (heard) Polk Audio - TL 250 surround (in Pakistan (PK).

But I found it to be a bit dull as far as sharp sounds (like the ones in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows; when is being fired through the trees) are concerned.

The bass sounds were good though.

I have also demoed Sib & Cubs; their sharpness (treble) was amazing but the bass (sub woofer needed more muscle).

My Receiver will be decided by the speakers (however I am considering Denon AVR 1200 & 710 W).

Any advice will be helpful.

The names which keep appearing on websites are:
Pioneer SP-FS52 Towers, SP-C22, SP-BS22-LR & Classic Take Energy.

I have read their reviews - but are they crispy enough?

Can you kindly suggest some other good models.

Thanks once again & keep up the good work.

Regards,

alibasham

If your budget is USD1000 for a 5.1 speaker system including the AVR then you probably should get those Pioneer speakers. If the $1,000 is for speakers only then you could check out the entry level Focal, Monitor and KEF systems, and they are typically what you called "crispy".

For small budget: Infinity, EMP, Pioneer, ELAC, NHT, HSU, SVS.

Denon AVR is good.

Thank you for your inputs.

The $ 1,000 is for the speakers & subwoofer (the whole 5.1).

AVR / Receiver budget is separate.

Can you kindly name some models of the Focal, Monitor and KEF systems mentioned.

My room size is 16 x 11 feet.

BTW, thanks PENG for instantly grabbing the crispy concept (please pardon my sound / music nomenclature, as I have to comprehend the sound dictionary yet) - as i had trouble explaining it to the guys here till i show them the scene, with Sherlock being fired upon with high velocity projectiles and trees are being shredded to splinters.

Thank you all again.

Subwoofers cost money. You need a big magnet, a sturdy box, and an amp. I would stick with the Pioneers, which I have experienced both the bookshelf and floor standers in my room, they definitely will have the sound you are looking for!

When you become truly addicted to sound, and will throw any amount of money in, take a look at Focal's Solo 6 Be and Twin 6 Be. Doesn't get any crisper than Beryllium! And those are actually a great value because they are self powered.

What are your purchase sources over there? Internet or local brick and mortar store?

macddmac - I will probably buy the equipment from Pakistan (Karachi); as it will also need installation and tuning. That being said, prices here (PK) are quite high (just add 40 - 50% to the regular AMAZON prices).

Most of the equipment is made in China, which has certain stigma attached to it.

Thanks Warrior, I will do the googling for these fine brands; after office hours (Pakistan time is generally 10 hours Plus US time (currently it is 11:54 AM in the morning).

BTW is Focal the same company that manufactures SIB & CUB series; as that setup I mentioned earlier was quite sharp (crisp? high treble? I am at a loss of word for it); the sub woofer was an 8"inch cub that could do better.

Can anybody comment on Polk Audio TL 250 vs SIB & CUB?

Installation is actually quite simple if you read up some guides that are available here and read the manuals of your equipment, so you don't need to pay extra for that and are not limited to local stores. In local stores you should go and listen to all speakers they have available so you get some idea how they sound and if there is anything that will sound like what you are looking for. If you could link some Pakistan online stores we could see what you have available there?

You are right on both counts.

Ironically none of the online stores deliver here in PK (I have checked with AMAZON).

Which is quite strange, just imagine iphones were costing here for almost $1,200 - 1,300 when these were launched (16 GB version). TVs & Stereos cost almost at 40-50% plus. Niche market exist in PK where people can afford these products.

We have a local BOSE store in Karachi - their prices are similar to that of US, but they remove one item from the package, for instance they will charge separately for the RECEIVER (adding US$400+ to the mix).

Pakistani Local stores operate on a roughly 20-25% margin on top of the local store prices; instead of passing the cost of not owning stores & saving the overheads of brick & mortar stores. The only USP they provide is shipping to you (on a sadistic note they charge extra if the item is over 1 Kg or not garment / food item.

You may check these links:

homeshopping.pk

1$US is equivalent to PK Rs. 104/-

Moving all the stuff from US to PK is quite expensive. As normally a flight allows 40 Kg max per person. And I have to request someone travelling, whenever that might be.

Can you order stuff from either Europe or Asia without additional costs? As on that shop you show / what google gives don't have many options. Or is there any audio shops that sells only audio stuff and have better variety you could link?

Europe / Asia - no links there - these don't deliver here either - so it is a dead end.

I was trying to paste the link, but the website says I need to have earlier posted at least replies, other wise it is treating it as spam.

You can visit that site and explore it as they have listed BOSE & JBL & others.

Shops have websites and they cover multiple brands; however every shop tries to push its own preferred brand.

For instance I have been quoted $650 for a DENON based 5.1 system with an obsolete receiver. Another shop quoted SKS 4A00 ONKYO based set for $750 etc.

Trying this forum was to get unbiased reviews of so many experts that populate this amazing site.

I always thought at least Hong Kong can/will still deliver and sell to anyone anywhere..
As mentioned, the Pioneer models you listed are good speakers, you can't wrong with them for your 1K budget. Klipsch speakers in general also have the reputation of being crisp, but until you get to their reference models you may find the treble a little harsh and aggressive. Focal tends to emphasize the treble but I don't find them harsh. Even their entry level models are more expensive but there are always the used market.

If the Pioneer SP-FS52 Towers, SP-C22, SP-BS22-LR are available I would take those as it seems the market out there is really limited indeed. Hook them up with best sub you can get and you are set.

I think your best bet how ever is to go around the local stores and audition speakers and buy what sounds best to your ears in your budget. Unless you can find some nice online store that has better variety and prices.

If a speaker system comes in one box, you do not want it.

What Tyhjaarpa listed: Pioneer SP-FS52 Towers(x2), SP-C22(x1), SP-BS22-LR(x2) is everything you need for 5 channel surround sound.

KEF, MartinLogan and Paradigm are good companies in my experience out of that site. How ever that site only says they do sell their products, but there is no info available what are the prices.. So you pretty much would need to ask them for 5.1 setups on your budget from those manufacturers and see what they would offer to you. Really hard to try recommend anything from those manufacturers without knowing prices as you are with budget.
