Please, somebody tell me this isn't for real.

"In an interview with the gay news site The Daily Xtra, Stefonknee (formerly Paul) Wolscht details his struggles with being a male-to-female transgender person.

The Daily Xtra video, however, glosses over a tiny bit of important information about Wolscht: he thinks he is actually a six year-old girl—not just a woman, but a six year-old girl—stuck in the body of a 50-something man."

The New Normal.
So many wonderful progressive strides we have made.

My understanding is that when it comes to what's considered a mental illness and what is under the broad umbrella of normal, is determined by psychiatrists. They have these conventions or whatever and basically vote on how to classify various situations. Seeing that the majority are educated in liberal to nstitutions and are themselves liberal, situations like in the original post meet with general acceptance. Me I think this is a hoax but it's not surprising to find groups saying this is the new normal.

As an aside, I read where trains women have the highest HIV rates.

I have difficulty understanding "mental illness". (Maybe because I are one.)
As a society, we have generally accepted standards and morals. Non-political, non-religious, non-specific behavior that is considered normal and acceptable.

When somebody moves outside of that "normal", when is it mental illness? How can anybody normal shoot up a school or theater? How can somebody normal abuse and murder their child? How can somebody normal do the horrible and sickening things you see people do on the news?

Are these people mentally ill, or just evil? How can we tell?

What you and Chu are missing is that mental illness is defined by behavior that is harmful or disruptive to one's self or others, or, as the Mayo clinic puts it: "...a mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function." It is a disease with symptoms, causes, treatments, etc. So whatever is 'normal' or 'abnormal' is not really a mental health concern. Of course, non-harmful but abnormal conditions used to be classified as mental illness only due to mores of past times, such as listing homosexuality in the DSM. That is something psychiatry institutions try to guard against nowadays. If what the man-girl from the first post is doing is not hurting himself or others, it isn't a mental health concern, no matter how undignified it is.

As for mental illness vs evil, in practice that is decided in courts by juries. As for determining mental illness, here the criteria for the DSM is relevant, even in determining personality disorders like what many people call 'sociopathy' and what psychiatry terms Anti-social Personality Disorder. What acts deserve jail vs treatment is a much larger debate, of course, but Anti-social Personality Disorder is a real brain condition which has been demonstrated in experiments, it is not just someone who decided to do something bad. Psychiatry certainly doesn't term anyone who commits an evil act to be mentally ill.

Well lets see... Wolscht's condition caused him to desert his wife and 7 children. He also made mention of suicidal thoughts, presumably caused by his age/gender dysphoria. I'd qualify that as harmful/disruptive to others as well as himself. As far as Wolscht's ability to function, just how well can a 6 year old girl stuck in a 52 year old man's body function in society? Granted, I'm not a lawyer, but I'd question how someone could be legally considered competent, given that 6 year old girls can't enter into contracts, etc.

Point taken Steve, I didn't read the article, so I qualified my statement with 'if'. In clinical terms, this guy is a real wack-job.

I'm going to go ahead and be completely politically incorrect and say that she is retarded. She missed her own daughter's wedding presumably because she couldn't act like a child and instead solicited suicide for attention.
