Trying to set up my first surround sound system...

I'll admit I don't know the first thing about a/v equipment and was trying to put together my first system on the cheap for my basement. Bought an Onknyo TX-SR303 second-hand on eBay and a set of Monoprice 5.1 speakers having read that they are decent for the price. Unfortunately I didn't do much research and found out once the receiver arrived that it has no HDMI input. I run everything through my PlayStation 3 and am wondering if I'm screwed and have to find a different receiver. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

The receiver is obselete in terms of using HDMI. You will either need a new receiver or a new way of connecting the play station. If you go the receiver route, you can run everything through the receiver and leave the game console as a peripheral.

So does everything that you would normally hook up to the tv now have to go through a receiver? As in PlayStation > receiver > tv?

Use the optical output on the PS3. You'll have to go into the PS3's audio settings and change it to optical then follow the prompts.

Leave the HDMI connected directly to the television.

It'll be just like the old days. Video straight to the TV, audio to the receiver.

Should work fine.

Ah, wouldn't have even thought to check the PS3 for optical. Thanks. So the only thing that needs to go to the receiver is an optical wire from the PS3? Nothing to the tv or anywhere else?

Not if the PS3 is your only source. Your TV appears to have no audio output of any kind, otherwise I would have recommended using one from there if applicable. Since you're doing surround sound it is best to go direct from the source, which in this case is the PS3.

Only connections needed:
  • Optical from PS3 to Receiver
  • HDMI from PS3 to Television
  • Subwoofer cable from Receiver to Subwoofer
  • Speaker wire from Receiver to Speakers

Only getting sound in the front left and right speakers... I have the PS3 set to optical with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

You may want to run the initial setup on the receiver again.

When you changed the settings on the PS3 did you choose which audio formats were supported or did you run the automatic configuration?
