Troubleshooting Sony Soundbar

Hi all -

I recently purchased a Sony Soundbar w/ Wireless Subwoofer and all of a sudden it stopped working with the remote. I've done a few troubleshooting things like a hard reset, confirming the IR remote works, etc. The soundbar still works, but it doesn't seem like the IR receiver is accepting a signal. It's only a month old and Sony wants to charge me to ship it back so they can replace it ($100 shipping). Any ideas on whether or not this is something i could try to fix myself or take to a local shop? Here's the Model #: HTCT380.

Thanks for the help,

David

If you have not already, put in new batteries. It would not be the first time lousy Chinese batteries come with remotes and stop them working properly.

If with good new batteries like Energizer it does not work, then the IR detector or the circuit for the IR system is defective.

If it is under warranty, then Sony needs to fix it, or your vendor replace it.

Make Sony or the vendor pay for shipping. If not ask your credit card company to remove the charges and get something else.

Who did you purchase it from? Where do you live? Those shipping charges sound excessive.

Thanks the response. Definitely tried putting better batteries in the remote. My neighbor actually has the same soundbar so I even tried his remote. I bought it at Best Buy, but they have a 14 day return policy. The reason it's so expensive to ship is because I'd have to send the subwoofer back too... Subwoofer (weight) plus long sound bar (odd shape) equals expensive shipping. Wondering if I should just try to find a local audio repair shop...

See if you can take it to a local Sony authorized repair center.

Unless it is a Sony certified service center it will invalidate your warranty. Also a local shop will not do it for free unless it is an authorized warranty shop. It will almost certainly cost more than $100.

Talk to Sony and Best Buy. See if they can do the exchange cheaper. I doubt that piece of junk is even serviceable, so it will probably be discarded anyway, so no point in wasting freight on that.
