How many time can they change the specification. I was reading about HDMI 2.0a for HDR 4k TVs. I have read that it may just be firmware upgrade for some, or is it a hardware upgrade. At this point I have given up trying to keep up with all the changes in a considerably short period of time.

Anyone have a better understanding on this?

I don't really have an understanding of it, sorry. But what I can say is that, unless you are getting a 4K TV or something like that, it's not really worth upgrading to 2.0. V1.4 should do. :)
