Hello, Are high end power cables worth buying ? I loved the video you did on
Bi-wiring. I know there is no difference, however I do run two runs of 12awg
Tributaries speaker cable just because I had it and it couldn't hurt just lessen
The resistance . I do not and will not buy high end bi-wire cable. I Have learned
Those do no better and could do more harm based on your other videos on
Cables. So are these high end power cables doing anything ? I don't see the
Manufacture giving you a power cable not good enough?

No, high end (high priced?) power cables are not worth buying, at any price.

There appears only to be pseudo-science behind power cord marketing. Any argument for boutique power cords is far weaker than the argument for boutique speaker cables, and that is on very thin ice.

If your power cord has been damaged, buy a suitable replacement. That means length and wire gauge.

Changing one small part of the power chain won't suddenly make the flowers bloom, birds sing and cause the clouds to part. Well, not for you, anyway. It will make these happen for the people who sell them.

Seriously, I have no life.
When I worked at a stereo store, we had a few well-known musicians as customers and one night, a couple of teen-aged guys were ogling the equipment, making plans for the future when they could afford it (not a high-end shop). One of them commented that he wanted to get a cord with gold plugs, for his guitar. It just happened that one of the well-known musicians was there and he stepped in, saying that if they really wanted to get the full benefit of improving the connections, all of the jacks and internal wiring of everything in the signal path would need to be upgraded, too. He told them that the typical cable has nickel-plated ends, that they're scraped clean every time the plug moves in or out of the jack and that everything would be fine as long as the equipment has no inherent problems with components or solder connections.

Said musician has produced albums and singles for a wide range of musical artists in addition to the 2007 Grammy nominated Kenny Wayne Shepherd release 'Ten Days Out', including O.A.R., Von Bondies, No Doubt, Stroke 9, Foo Fighters, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Verve Pipe, Rusted Root, Live (Throwing Copper, Mental Jewelry), Crash Test Dummies, Poi Dog Pondering, Fine Young Cannibals, BoDeans, It's Immaterial, and Violent Femmes.

He left and the kids asked who they had been talking to- I thought they were going to pass out when I told them.

No power cables don't matter. Biwiring is a waste of time too. Save your wires.

Like said already, it is better to save your moneys for something that will give you real benefits and not imaginary things.

At the end of the day all that matters is that it sounds good to you. Nearly every online audio retailer as well as cable vendors offers an audition (www.audioadvisor.com, www.crutchfield.com) It's best that you actually listen to any component, including power cables, in your own system, I would be interested in seeing your post. As for which cable you should try and what to budget if you call one of the dealers they will ask you about your system and generally make some pretty good suggestions. If you don't like them just send them back for a refund. Make sure you ask them about the break in period.

Ever thought about why they sell these cables? It's because people buy them and they make a lot of money. If someone were to replace the power cord and you didn't know it but still noticed a difference, the change might be valid but when YOU know the cable is being changed and YOU paid for it, bias toward perceived changes exists. You want it to sound better because you paid for it and the fact that it's possible to return the item takes a back seat to this fact. They also count on the fact that some people will decide that returning it is too much trouble, so they'll keep it, even if it didn't improve anything.

You wrote that you're an engineer? What, exactly, could be made better if this new, fancy power cord is used? It's not a filter, it can't add anything, it won't increase power output and it's on the incoming side of the power supply, so it's not in the signal path. It might look better, be more flexible or have impressive packaging but the plug still uses the same receptacle and the other end still uses the same IEC receptacle in the chassis of the equipment.

I think you need one of these-

I can see you guys love stock power cords, you are welcome to put $2 a meter lamp cord on your $$$ equipment. Please stick to what you have listened to, not what you "imagine" what it sounds like if you actually auditioned it. If it floats your boat to post about your imaginary listening, feel free.

Said the guy who thinks his $$$ power cord makes a difference.

Look at what it's doing- 120VAC, 60 Hz, some amount of current, up to and possibly a bit more than the rating of the breaker. Period. It has noise passing through it, but that's usually filtered out by the power supply. If the difference is audible, it will be visible on a scope.

I listen to the music and the sound of the music- if I start buying CDs and other formats for the sole reason that they sound better than great music that doesn't sound great, it means that I have completely lost the reason for listening.

YMMV

Highfligh, I see you have made over 6000 posts to this board. That means two things:
1. You are passionate about audio
2. You have a lot of free time.
Why not take some of that free time and either audition the product I posted about send it back for a refund after 30 days, and post what you heard. Alternatively find something (anything) negative about the product discussed in the review I posted from someone who actually listened to it (not imagines what it might sounds like)

Do you think they would publish negative comments about their products?

Again, I listen to the music.
