Ported? Sealed? Downfiring?

Looking for a sub to go with my Paradigm Atoms series 7. I will be using the sub mostly for music. I am more interested in getting a tight slam and clean bass as opposed to a deep loud rumbling bass. My budget is $750 or less. First, which style is more known to give me the kind of sound that I am looking for. Second, What brands and models do you recommend?

Sounds like you are describing a sealed sub. At that price point I'd say give the SVS SB2000 a look. Moving above that in price would be the Rythmik F12 and the PSA XS15se.

A quality subwoofer will do all of what you describe, but, it will do it only when the source material calls for it.

What subs have you owned in the past?

What subs have you demoed up to this point?

What subs have you demoed that you liked?

Go by the SVS site. They're running a closeout special on the SB12-NSD. Hell, you could get a pair of these for a little more than $900 shipped. That'd be all the sub you'd ever need.

I have no idea why the annunaki's quote ended up in my response. Come to think of it my responses have been real labored to load. Are they doing updates to the site?

Does Rythmik have anything in the OP's price range that is sealed? Seems to be a general consensus their sealed subs are among the quickest of tactile transducers.

I have the LV12-R which is a ported sub. It's very fast and articulate in its bass reponse and is on sale for $569.00

Personally I prefer sealed having owned several ported in the past. With my current sub I didn't sacrifice much if any SPL but gained a greater ability to dig deeper and play louder with a single sealed sub. The best part was it came in a similar sized footprint and now the port doesn't need to contribute to the overall sound.

I like both recommendations in post 2....albeit... slightly over your budget. But the PSA XS15 se is 799.00 deliver to your door and comes with free return shipping if your not pleased.

The PSA XS15se has the best impulse response- thus the tightest measured sound, of all subs mentioned so far.

Also, down firing vs front firing doesn't matter one iota. There are some very well made vented designs with tight impulse control, you just have to look around. So while vented vs sealed does matter a little, it matters somewhat not as much as you'd think.

I don't see how we can make recommendations without knowing all the info... Sure some of these are all likely good subs but we don't know the whole scoop.

I don't like recommending something until I know the whole scoop, until then I will opt out.

Don't read too much into this, I don't take myself that seriously

This is very true. Many of the sealed subs discussed won't perform as well as advertised in an open floor of 4000 cubic feet or more.
