Yamaha RX-675 Newbie Setup Help?!

I purchased a RX-V675 a couple of weeks ago. I'm a pretty technical/handy guy, however I'm admittedly an AV novice. There are several things I can't figure out and its driving me completely nuts. The manual seems practically useless. I've poured over the entire thing to no avail. I was hoping you all could help me out. I have all of my components connected straight into the unit (DirecTV Geni, Sony Blueray, Roku and a Yamaha bluetooth receiver). The unit is connected to a Samsung LCD TV that is about 5 years old via a HDMI 25' redmere cable. DirecTV is connected via HDMI and optical cables. I have the unit connected to a 5.1 speaker setup.

1. I can only get the audio to come out of all 5 speakers when the unit is set to 7ch stereo. Shouldn't it output to all 5 speakers when set to "straight", "sports", "drama" etc? What am I doing wrong? I'm worried that I'm not getting actual surround using the 7ch stereo setting and would like to utilize some of the other sound programs.

2. I'm trying to keep things simple for my wife and kids by utilizing HDMI control and the DirecTV remote. I think my TV is too old to have ARC but it does have Samsung Anynet. I can get the unit to turn off when I hit power off on the DirecTV remote, but it will not power back on. I know I could get a Logitech Harmony or equivalent, however the DirecTV RF remote is in my opinion very easy to use for my family.

3. Audio works just fine without the optical cable from the DirecTV geni. Do I actually need the optical cable? The unit keeps reverting back to audio from HDMI instead of AV4 and I can't get it to stop. So if I don't actually need the optical cable that would be good to understand.

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully we can get you all set up.

1. Did you perhaps plug your surround speakers into the "Surround Back" speaker terminals on the Yamaha? If so, switch those to the "Surround" speaker terminals. The "Surround Back" are used with a 7.1 setup, and you're description made me think that maybe you'd done that. Several folks have had that same thing happen.

2. I'd have to dig into your owners manuals for the power issue, and I don't know what TV you have. You can check if there's a menu option on the TV for powering on over HDMI control in addition to powering off (which you say it is doing). I have this vague recollection of seeing a menu option on a TV that let you pick if you wanted to do one or both of those.

3. If audio works fine without the optical cable, then you don't need it. Often components will give you multiple options to make connections to make it easier to integrate with a variety of other systems, but you don't need to use all of them.

Some Yamaha receivers have separate buttons for on and off, but yours doesn’t – one button does both so you shouldn't have any problem programming the DirecTV remote to operate it. There are several options in the DirecTV menu for Yamaha remotes. Try a different one.

Perhaps your limited successes can help me solve a similar problem. I too just recently purchased Yamaha RX-V675 and attempting to channel the audio from a Samsung UN557150 through the Yamaha to five (5) speakers. I've tried the ARC connections using an Amazon Basics HDMI High Speed cable which is supposed to be compatible with ARC 1.4, but have been unsuccessful in getting the audio through the receiver/speakers.

It would beneficial if you could share your exact audio connection set-up you utilized?

hi, i suggest that u off all HDMI controls leaving it pass through.
before that press and hold the main power n tone to check your settings.
Straight will only playback formats encoded in the source without any DSP used.
