New Speaker's or Sub...

Hello, I recently upgraded my old [ 1999 ] kenwood A/V receiver.. And bought a new yamaha HTR-3066..
Now i was wondering if i want to replace my front tower speakers, or get a sub...
My tower speakers were bought a while back , and not very ? - They are Optimas Pro LX10, tower speakers, and the spec's are.

The Optimus LX10 are decent speakers - I do not consider the Infinity to be
much of an upgrade - I would consider it more of a lateral move.

I asked a similar question here at Audioholics. I bought a subwoofer first considering I already had functioning speakers. This is a reply that I thought had a lot of good info in it.

Since in home theaters your avr {receiver} crosses the frequencies so the fronts do not get freqs under say 80hz instead sending them to the subwoofer there is no reason for the larger cabinets...
#3 the most important part of an HT system is the subwoofer, don't skimp in this area...

I ended up buying an HSU STF-2 subwoofer. Night and day difference compared to my 2002 box-store Kenwood subwoofer/speaker set.

That Linaeum Tweeter is something WmAx used to talk about, supposed to be a really good unit. Personally when I started my very first system it was 4.0. I added a subwoofer later, and then finally a Center. Finish off each piece before you replace something you already have. Subwoofers don't have to match, speakers should.

This is food for thought but, given the lack of any details at all provided as to what he's looking to improve upon, I'd have to say a sub would be the better of the two options he offered.

And, he's not going to be able to find a center to match his existing speakers.

The salient question is what do YOU think about the sound quality of YOUR current speakers?

If they already sound crystal clear to you, then all you need is a subwoofer.

As for surround sound, i say the optimus LX10 DUAL WOOFER are great, but center channel may not be best match. It is a yamaha NS-AC3, which were part of a set i bought new in ? 1999.. but using some bose [ cube ] speakers for rear surround, mounted on wall..

I see alot of neg thoughts on the optius LX10'S [ NOT HERE ] BUT think its just because of name. - Im a 50/50 listener of surround, and then 2 channel when i listen to my music.... And thats where the optimus lack for me. BUT are a hell of alot better with my new yamaha HTR-3066 RECEIVER..... I currently have email into Madisound, and they are given recom, on possable woofer replacments.. But not sure if ill go that route..
Oh, and when i took apart optimus tower, it seems they are not 7 inch woofer ? Seem more like 6.5..[ BOX CUT OUT IS 6 7/8 ]
ALSO
Ill attach pic, as im tryin to find out what this tube is mounted behind upper woofer. As i dont know...

And more info,--- Im in small apartment, and surround speaker set up isnt the best...

Thanks, And whats the purpose if i may ask. And thanks for link to center channel.. My current center is yamaha NS-AC3, Which was package deal in kit NS-AP150. Here are spec's. Center has, Midrange/ Woofer (NS-AC3) 2 * 5" Cone Magnetically Shielded -- And surround (NS-A770) 5" Cone

Well, you've proved me wrong. You found one! ...and matching surrounds. Now it's up to the OP. Replacing woofers won't improve anything so it's up to him to decide if more bass will solve his problem, or new speakers all around.

In either case, new speakers will still need a sub

To give brace support between the back wall and front baffle, with the aid of the woofer,
to help control the cabinet resonance - resonance is not a friend.
Also, maybe to help diffuse some of the back air waves of the speaker.

For me, I would fire the Yamaha center channel - the timbre (tone color) does not match
or blend with the front l/r speakers.

However, all this is your call
