When did PayPal fees become the new tax on used items?? If want to get 500 dollars for something your selling but your planning to use paypal to collect.. then list the item at 515. I dunno maybe I'm the only one annoyed by this but the whole thing seems petty to me. If you are going to sell something using paypal... then plan for the paypal fees.

I agree 100%. See my response in your post about the Vanders. If a seller tried to tack on fees after an Ebay auction ends, then they are in direct violation of Ebay policy and should be reported to the ebay police.

I've only used PayPal a few times, for inexpensive items where it was the only form of payment accepted. My question is, why are fees inappropriate? Credit card companies get them. Banks get them. It seems reasonable that any company with the infrastructure to handle secure money transactions, would get a fee. They are a business, right? They have expenses, right? How would they exist without charging somebody a fee?

herbu, it's not that the fees are inappropriate...it's the way people ask buyers to pay for them.

Did you read the example in the OP?

If you want to get $500 for your item, then charge $515.24 for it, not say it's $500 and then ask for the paypal fee. If it makes you feel better, give a cash discount and say it's only $500 if paying with cash :)

If both the seller's and the buyer's banks offer Popmoney, that's a much better way to do online transactions than PayPal. Popmoney only charges $0.95 per transaction. Whenever I sell anything online I offer the item for the price I want via Popmoney, or price + PP fees via PayPal. Sadly, out of the many things I've sold online, I could only convince one buyer to use Popmoney. It worked a treat, though, appearing in my checking account the very next day. It usually takes 3 or 4 days for PayPal money to transfer to my bank.

Bitcoin is another alternative to PayPal fees, but I never got into Bitcoin myself. Bitcoin overwhelms me and makes me nervous. To me, Bitcoin feels like buying tokens at an arcade. Within the arcade I can spend those tokens on whatever I wish, but I'll never be able to use those tokens anywhere else, nor will I ever see those dollars again. I know there are services like Zinc Save that'll let a buyer shop with Bitcoins at Amazon, Wal-Mart and several other sites, but Bitcoin won't do me any good in the grocery store or at the gas station. *shrug*

Whenever someone actually says "buyer pays fees" instead of just building it into the price, I usually won't buy from that person :)

Paypal is being offered up for sale by Ebay now, so we'll see if it gets better or worse. I've been using it a lot less lately even though I've never had issues with it.

Yeah, I too hate when sellers ask for Paypal fees. It's the cost of doing business and getting paid instantly, so suck it up. I never bought and will never buy from someone who asks for Paypal fees on top of the agreed sale price.
No need to worry when you buy on eBay because sellers can't ask for Paypal fees but on Audiogon everyone seems to ask for it.
I have only had one unpleasant experience on ebay with someone I was going to buy an amp from. I won the auction for the amp and the seller sends an invoice where he changed the shipping price from the listed $30 to $45. I asked him why he did that and his response was that it costs him extra money in gas to go to the USPS store.
I told him to shove it up his ass and reported him to ebay.

OK. I see, thanks. So I'm guessing the folks who don't like the added PayPal fees really love the ads on TV that say, "Get a 2nd item for FREE, plus processing and handling". I wonder how many people realize the fees are enough to fully pay the mfg cost of the item. Same with their 100% Guarantee. You pay enough in fees to pay for the item. Nice.
