So this past Tuesday best buy had the 4520 on sale for 999.98 I just went to my local best buy and they honored that price. I think that's a good deal for that receiver. If you are in the market for one I would head over to your local bb.

I just bought it right after AcuDefTechGuy mentioned it. Mine is still in box, haven't decided if I am going to keep it. I am a deal whore and 1k was too good to pass up. I am sure I will find a use for it :)

That is one heck of a good price. I've had my 4520 for a bit over 6 months and I have been extremely pleased. It has so many features I don't even use but the big seller for me was the dual sub room correction. The PIP HDMI function is great for football season but other than that I have not used it much.

Made in Japan, flagship Denon AVR for $1000 is extraordinary.

Hmmm... might consult the abacus:

1. US$1000 = A$1070

2. 5% customs duty = A$54

3. Standard shipping (MyUS.com - #1 International Shipping, Mail and Package Forwarding Service) = A$285

4. 10% GST on 1. & 3. = A$136

5. Miscellaneous, say = $A50

6. 1000W step down transformer = A$161 (shipped)

TOTAL (1 to 6) = A$1756

Local on-line price = A$2396 (shipped)

SAVING: $A640

Shame my 5 year old Onkyo refuses to pack it in. :D

Almost worth it though, just to give the finger to the local rip-off merchants.

Most things there seem more expensive. I have to assume Australians enjoy higher salaries..

I'm glad to hear from the people who own them that they like them. Do you think that even though this is now an "older model" avr it is still a better buy at its price point than say the new x4100 I was going to buy for more?

YES, that avr should be good until it either breaks or a new feature comes out that you have to have... But in the future that I can see, you are good for a long time, it probably has 50 features you will never use, and IMO is one of the best made units I ever seen... You did very good...

I agree, even the 4520 has much more features than what most people need. In terms of theoretical/potentially better sound quality and more real power output I would rank the 4520 and 4311 above the X4100W and the X5200W.

My salary never seems high enough for my wife though. ;)

I think you assume correctly PENG. The gulf in prices of electronics seems disproportionate though. We are also a comparatively small market too, so retailers basically charge what they can get away with. The usual refrain is: "mate, you won't be covered by our 3 year warranty". But at that price difference, I could ship it back to the US twice for repairs if I had to, and still come out ahead.

Ok it's in and hooked up and I know I have a learning curve still but I'm gonna say so far I love it. I do have a few quick questions , my old onkyo no hdmi I used optical while playing a movie would tell you on screen if it was dolby digital or dts the denon just says multi chanel in while playing different movies, does it not tell you the format or is something not right? My other question was regarding the audyssey seeming to set my sub very low or I used to have it real hot lol. Thanks for any info.

1. Multichannel: Your player is decoding the audio and sending multichannel PCM via the HDMI output. If you want the Denon to display the audio format, you have to let it do the decoding. To do this, just go into your player's menu and set the HDMI output to "Bitstream".

2. Sub level: This is fairly common feedback from new Audyssey users. It's usually because Audyssey's filters clean up the bass response so well, there's much less boominess and overhang, making the bass sound like it's at a reduced level. Audyssey is also setting the sub's level trim according to film reference level, which results the Denon's -30dBFS internal test noise measuring an average of 75dBSPL (C-weighted) at the first measurement position. This is simply reference. If your preference is hotter sub output, by all means turn it up, but at least you have a reference setting to come back to if you need to. It might also pay to check the Denon's LFE level settings to make sure there's no silly default turning down the LFE channel output by 5 or 10dB.

Ok so another question about the 4520, "still learning" I used to run a hdmi to my TV from the cable box then a optical from the TV to avr "non hdmi avr". So now with the new denon all my hdmi cables run to it and one from it to my tv. The problem is I have Netflix and amazon on my TV and I'm not sure how the arc works. I thought the arc would carry the audio back from my TV to the avr but it doesn't seem to. So my question is should it or do I still need to just use an optical wire from tv to avr? I have the hdmi plugged into port 1 on my tv which says arc right next to it, my tv is a pannasonic tc-p58vt25. Thanks for any help.
