I would guess 3.5 or so. Nothing huge, but it made a hanging lamp sway.

Dead wrong, Irv! It was a 6.0 just north of the Bay Area, according to the USGS.

Yep. News has lots of coverage this morning. Lots of stuff fell off shelves in stores, roads & buildings damaged. They say epicenter was 6 miles SSW of Napa. Glad all you had was a swinging lamp.

It's the worst quake in the Bay Area in 25 years, since the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. I'm in the South Bay, which explains why I didn't feel its power.

Well, the Napa region is a mess. Some roads buckled. Many brick buildings damaged. A house or two knocked off their foundations. My apartment building in the South Bay has some new cracks in the stucco exterior, very minor. As the crow flies, Napa is about 70 miles from here. If the quake's epicenter had hit here, near the heart of Silicon Valley, it would have been mass chaos. I think I'll start keeping more emergency food and water around. :)

Glad you're safe Irv! I think Darien lives in the bay area as well. Anybody heard from him?

Thanks for the thoughts PSB. I'm even farther South than Irv. We didn't feel it at all.

Napa got rocked though. The wife and I were just in downtown Napa for vacation a few months ago and were in the area that got hit hard. Luckily we missed out on the chaos. I know they've been doing a lot of renovations to the downtown area recently. Hope this doesn't cause too many problems.

Whatever you do save the wine!!!!!

You're pretty far away comparatively. I live on the third floor and I was woken up by it and knew what it was immediately. It was definitely the strongest one in a long time.

3.5? We have those probably on a monthly basis. Probably barely notice those. When they get to 4s and 5s, you know it. 6 is big. Only 5 days past the anniversary of the 6.9 Loma Prieta quake.

Earthquakes can happen pretty much anywhere. Just asked the people in Haiti.

Absolutely. The first quake I ever experienced was in Dayton, Ohio.
There were more quakes that caused damage in the east and the south than there were in California last year. We happen to have a lot of active fault lines here in the bay area, but that doesn't mean they are limited to here. I'll take the possibility of an earthquake over the pretty much guarantee of a hurricane or tornado :D Pretty much you aren't going to live somewhere where there isn't the possibility of something going on.

Respect Mother Nature because she has no respect for you.

I'm more worried about a fellow driver killing me than a natural disaster.

I know we can have earthquakes, but its not too likely to have one that causes a ton of damage... Today's Earthquakes in United States about a year ago I was standing on my outside porch with a spotting scope looking at a ground hog about 125 yards away and the house shook for about 19 seconds, I thought it was a my home theater but I seen on the news it was a 2.8 earth quake, lol... First time I ever felt one, actually only time...
I was in Nashville for my birthday in {feb 2011} and seen a Tornado it was an f2 or f3 it was pretty scary, the radio stations went crazy with warnings, cops closed off roads, we weren't far from it but it was an intense feeling... The guys down there were like eh' no big deal, probably how we react to hurricanes... Now in further away from the coast so not as much of an issue, when we were in RI, they were a little different...

PS and the people in Haiti just did that for attention... jk, is it too soon, to joke about that?
