Happy 65th to the 45!:D

RCA released 76 EP box sets and 104 45 rpm singles to the market on March 31, 1949.

"The new life-long record, which is less than seven inches in diameter is made of durable, lightweight vinyl plastic and plays up to five minutes and twenty seconds on each side. The record player, which operates at 45 rpm, contains the fastest record-changing mechanism ever designed. The excellent quality and clarity of tone of the new reproducing system has been highly praised by outstanding musicians.

There is every indication that as a significant achievement in the evolution of the phonograph it will ultimately benefit the majority of consumers as well as the entire record industry. The durable record player, together with a substantial catalogue of records, soon will be available to the public."

Neil Young's new covers record A Letter Home has been released through Jack White's Third Man records just in time for Record Store Day. There's been no formal announcement, but Third Man is accepting orders for the vinyl version right now through their website. It retails for $20, plus shipping.

Neil Young's Incredible Carnegie Hall Shows: 10 Must-See Videos
The entire record - which includes covers of classic songs by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and many others - was recorded in a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph vinyl recording booth at Young's Third Man store in Nashville, Tenn. A message on Young's website describes the album as "an unheard collection of rediscovered songs from the past recorded on ancient electro-mechanical technology captures and unleashes the essence of something that could have been gone forever."

Here is a complete track listing:
1. "Changes" (Phil Ochs)
2. "Girl From The North Country" (Bob Dylan)
3. "Needle of Death" (Bert Jansch)
4. "Early Morning Rain" (Gordon Lightfoot)
5. "Reason To Believe" (Tim Hardin)
6. "On The Road Again" (Willie Nelson)
7. "If You Could Only Read My Mind" (Gordon Lightfoot)
8. "Since I Met You Baby" (Ivory Joe Hunter)
9. "My Hometown" (Bruce Springsteen)
10. "I Wonder If I Care As Much" (Everly Brothers)
Many of these covers have been in Young's setlist over the past few months, though he has yet to play "Girl From The North Country," "On The Road Again," "My Hometown" or "I Wonder If I Care As Much." Young will be spending much of his summer gigging around Europe with Crazy Horse.

Jack White makes history with world's fastest released record Jack White Tickets

The singer also debuts new material during day of festivities at Third Man Records in Nashville

Jack White made history yesterday by producing the world's fastest released record during a day of festivities to mark Record Store Day at his Third Man studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

At 10am on Saturday (April 19), the singer took to the stage in the Blue Room of his studio to record a limited edition direct-to-acetate single. The room is the only live venue in the world where artists can record live shows straight to vinyl. The masters were then rushed over to United Record Pressing plant in Nashville, which began pressing the 45s before they were delivered back to hundreds of fans queuing outside Third Man, some of whom had queued all night to be there.

At the morning gig, White walked onto stage flanked by two men in helmets dressed like characters from 1970s cop programme Chip for the intimate studio show, tickets for which had sold out in 23 seconds. He began with the title track and first single from his forthcoming second solo album 'Lazaretto', the A-Side to the Record Store Day single. He then recorded a cover of Elvis Presley's 'The Power Of My Love' for the B-Side.

During the performance, a screen to the right of the stage showed a close up of the acetate template for the record being produced before an announcement declared that "the records have left the building!"

"Originally, we were gonna play these two tracks then go back to sleep," White told the crowd. "But we thought you'd like it if we played a couple more."

He then launched into The White Stripes' 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground' before heading straight into 'Freedom At 21' and 'Three Women' – two tracks from his 2012 debut solo album 'Blunderbuss'. He then picked up an acoustic guitar for more solo tracks – 'Weep Themselves to Sleep' and 'Love Interruption'. A rendition of The White Stripes' 'Ball And Biscuit' saw the crowd sing all the vocals as White jammed along.

"We're gonna try a new song," he then told the audience, before premiering honky tonk rock track 'Just One Drink'. White Stripes track 'Hotel Yorba' was followed by another new track, 'Would You Fight For My Love' - a brooding number about a relationship breakdown, which culminates in White shrieking "I want you to fight for my love".

After the show, White then rushed off to the United Record Pressing to oversee the pressing process as more fans queued outside to get a copy in the sunshine.

Some 3 hours, 55 minutes and 21 seconds later, White returned in a black car flanked by the two men on motorbikes dressed as police officers to sell the first copy of the 7" on the specially constructed stall outside the Third Man shop. The first customers were Whirlwind Heat – who then went inside to play their first gig in eight years in the Blue Room for a one-off reunion to mark the re-issue of their 2003 LP 'Do Rabbits Wonder?'

"I woke up at about 4 in the morning last night, and I thought, 'Wow. I think there's about 12 or 13 things that could really go wrong tomorrow,' he told a press conference. "I just thought how difficult it would be to explain to people if we didn't pull it off, so thank God we did."

"When you just go gangbusters and attack something, it just seems to work out. All the molecules line up or something," he added.

Speaking about Record Store Day generally, he said: "It's bigger than ever. Every neighbourhood wants to have one [an independent record store] and the thousands of people you see here at Third Man and Grimeys and record stores all around Nashville even – you can see how popular and important that is to people."

Jack White played:

'Lazaretto'
'The Power Of My Love'
'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground'
'Freedom At 21'
'Three Women'
'Weep Themselves to Sleep' and 'Love Interruption'
'Ball And Biscuit'
'Just One Drink'
'Hotel Yorba'
'Would You Fight For My Love'

Jack White's 'Lazaretto' Debuts At No. 1, Sets Vinyl Sales Record

11:33 AM PDT 6/18/2014 by Keith Caulfield, Billboard

Third Man/Columbia

Miranda Lambert's "Platinum" slips to No. 2 and the soundtrack to "Frozen" also falls to No. 3.

Rocker Jack White claims his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as Lazaretto bows in the top slot with 138,000 sold in the week ending June 15, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The effort follows his solo debut, Blunderbuss, which also opened atop the list and sold 138,000 in its first frame. (It sold a handful of copies less, actually, but when rounded to the nearest thousand, both figures become 138,000.)
Lazaretto -- released on White's Third Man Records label through Columbia Records -- also sets the record for the largest sales week for a vinyl album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

The vinyl LP sold 40,000 copies -- easily enough to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart. (The vinyl edition of the album has many unusual bonus features that clearly intrigued consumers.)
It beats the debut of Pearl Jam's Vitalogy, which sold 34,000 vinyl LPs in its first week, back in 1994. (Notably, Vitalogy was issued on vinyl first, two weeks before its release on CD and cassette.)
"This is my proudest moment with Third Man Records, this object," White said of the LP to Conan O'Brien during an appearance on Conan on June 11. During some of his recent TV appearances White has described some of the unique qualities the vinyl piece contains, like how the LP plays at three different speeds, the tracks it has hidden under the center label (that are playable) and how side A plays from the inside to the outside of the disc.

To put the sales of the vinyl Lazaretto in further perspective, the configuration on its own would have ranked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 this week. In total, vinyl LP sales of Lazaretto accounted for 28.9 percent of the album's first-week sales -- nearly beating the number of CDs that were sold (41,000; 30 percent of the album's debut). Downloads were 41.1 percent.
Aside from White, the top of the Billboard 200 is pretty sleepy, with the next-highest new entry landing at No. 12: Passenger's Whispers. It's the act's highest-charting album and, with 19,000 sold, its best sales week yet.

Is the 2010 version remastered? I have the 1979 version and deem it to be a well recorded album.

Oh yes. I have the 79 version released by Backstreet records, but the 2010 pressing is by Original Recordings Group. Chris Bellman, of Bernie Grundman Mastering, was responsible for mastering this reissue--and he transferred the original analog master tapes directly to vinyl. It's nice to own both.
