Really Boring Stuff Only III: Resurrection

I don't recall if I gave a response.

They are some older Dell's. None of them are HDCP complaint and only have DVI inputs. I was hoping to budget this year for a couple of 26 inch models but other staff really needed new computers so I will wait until next year.
Okay. So you got nothing special but there's three!

Yesterday, I put a number of things out for a donation pick up. I got home last night after dark, the stuff was gone, and I had a receipt from the charity placed in my door. All normal.

So, imagine my dismay this morning when I saw the bulk of the stuff that I had set out sitting across the street on my neighbors curb (including several bags and a mountain bike). Looks like a set of PC speakers is missing, but the rest is there still in the bags. I'm leaning towards being upset at my new neighbor and thinking she swiped it, but that makes no sense to me (as I don't think she was home before the pickup occurred) unless her mom (who I think is visiting) doesn't understand and thought it was put out for anyone. However, if she took it, I never would have gotten a receipt from the charity. Plus, why swipe it only to put it back out where I'd clearly recognize it (it's still all in the same bags with my labels on it)? All very confusing. Anyway, I contacted the charity and let them know the stuff is out on the curb again.
She only took what she wanted out of that first pile and let them take the rest hence the receipt. After she came to her senses she realized that she didn't want some other stuff and put that out. It doesn't really make sense that you would put her through the agony of giving stuff away to God knows who when it could have been all hers! You wanna see her light up? Give her a tour of the attic. Why don't you have a cellar? Can't be the water table.

I gotta go. I got sh!t to f^%& up. :D

Mystery solved. The charity e-mailed me back this afternoon and let me know that the woman across the street called yesterday to let them know that her mom had taken the stuff that I put out, and she asked them to come by today to pick it up and to send me a receipt. They said that I should get one in the mail in a few days. So, why I got one yesterday...still a little mystery, unless they got the call early enough and had someone drop one off. It's cool that she called them, though.

Why don't you have a cellar? Can't be the water table.
Caliche. It's a hard clay in the soil here that apparently makes it pretty expensive to dig basements. At least, that's what I've heard for years. Seems like a freaking backhoe shouldn't have too much trouble. Plus, doesn't seem to apply to my house because it was built on fill dirt from other parts of the development. I'd love to have a basement, but no such luck.

Adam, would you like to borrow my shovel?

Indian Dude with the weird user name, clairvoyance isn't my forte but I love to be surprised by good behavior. Seems to me that YAA has used up all his good luck acquiring gear and duping a princess into thinking that he's worth while. The nice neighbor good luck is not for him. His neighbors will be corn holes. Life is balance.

Well, this whole computer thing really put me in a sticky wicket. Well I'm going to go spend about $3K at the apple store. Between the money I owe the rents for spotting me the deposit and first month's rent, this whole computer thing, and the higher utility bills, I'll be pretty broke for the foreseeable future. Hopefully I make it more than a year :D

PS I'm physically ill at the idea of how much money I'm spending. Not the amount per se, but the unexpectedness of it when myself and my parents are already stretched thin. They offered to spot me half BTW which is incredibly generous of them. Otherwise I'd be up a certain creek without a paddle with school stuff starting in two weeks. That I have to have a computer for.

$3K? Good gravy Marie! You know, you can get a refurb macbook pro from apple.com for a grand or so I think.

$3k? Dude, you're putting yourself in a sticky wicket. Like others have said, you can get a new laptop for a lot less than that. :)

Either way...spill, man - what are you getting (or did you already get)? :D

Well, a couple things. Being that this is my first year teaching I don't want to take any chances with this or that or any such thing which is why I was hell bent on new and not used. Second of all, when I get some extra cash I can always get the old one repaired and have a backup computer with a new one. It's the more expensive route, but better than having the fear of the repaired one dying again and being left in a lurch mid week with all my lesson plans on it. Also worth noting is that the computer took a couple things down with it (possibly) or they just didn't survive the move. I'm not really sure which is the cause since I was in the process of getting things hooked up when extreme panic set in. In any case my BD burner is toast (at least I think it is) and I'm mostly sure my NAS is gone as well.

My parents paid for the laptop (to be paid back) and I bought myself a new external storage mehjigger. Check the what new stuff thread in about 90 seconds or so for more details on what exactly was purchase :D

The hits keep coming. Trackball is dead as well. Awesome.
Good thing you didn't have somebody else move your stuff. Thinking they were responsible for all this broke stuff would be maddening ... but your part way there regardless. Congrats on the new stuff. Sorry about all the dead stuff.

What are you doing up?

I'm going back through what happened and if the logic board failed, it looks like it surged or something and destroyed everything that was plugged into it. If I'm not totally incompetent and I googled the right part, the logic board houses all the USB ports and other connection "stuff". All the things that are dead were plugged in at the time of death so I'm thinking it really was the computer and not moving that took all the peripherals it could down with it.

School is not in session, I have no current responsibilities or pressing matters other than some online seminar I have to do before August, so basically I don't sleep. Adam knows I don't sleep.

This computer unpleasantness aside, you are right in the middle of what I would call the best part of life.

I'm going to hit a junk yard to get some practice removing an accumulator and maybe a compressor. I'll probably need the bolt that holds the manifold on as mine is a little rounded. Yesterday the truck got a differential cover. Tomorrow the world ... well, maybe just a/c and tomorrow might be a little optimistic. Look, I don't need this kind of pressure.

Only one other person in the office so I finally get to crank my work system. Needless to say I really really really love these speakers. :D:D:D:D:D
