Which 1995 Receiver Should I Buy - Kenwood KR-A5707 or Sony STR-D565?

General home use. Ipod. CDs. TV. Old Bose 301 shelf speakers. Small space. May also buy used home theater speaker setup. Want to spend less than $50.

Kenwood KR-A5707 ($50)

or

Sony STR-D565 ($40)

Thanks!

If memory serves me well, my recollections of that time tell me that neither were paragons of reliability during that period. But, of the two I'd probably go for the Sony.

Kenwood actually had two stores in this area (that I'm aware of) that just sold their factory refurbs and nothing else. Now, if they had enough return/repair/resells to support at least two stores within twenty miles of each other, well, do the math.

Thanks Mark - I've seen a lot of your other posts so I know this comes from a reliable source. I was leaning in that direction.

Saw that one. Thanks but Plainfield is a bit far.

Is it yours by chance? Is the Yamaha preferable to the Sony? Hour each way with traffic, snow, etc

You could know where I live by same how I know where do you live - It's the right top corner of the post and I have never been in Illinois
and +1 to what Mark said - I'd take yammi over both Sony and Kenwood... It's stereo only, but great way to start 2.0 system on the extreme budget.
Hour driving each way probably wont cost you $15 in gas unless you drive a tank :)

Which is better: To spend 2 extra hours to get a quality unit, or to not take the time and get a lesser one?

Now, since the Yamaha is not mine, and we are talking about something used, I cannot give you any guarantees that the one under discussion is in good condition. Listen to whatever you buy before you part with your money, and if the sound is not clear and undistorted, do not buy it no matter what it is.

Pyrrho makes a very good point. If it doesn't work 100%, don't bother. Heck, you can get a brand new stereo Sherwood RX-4105 for about $125 (It was $100 a few months ago. Wothoppend?)

Hmmm. Well I contacted the guy and he still has it. So that's good. No remote though. That matter? Did a quick search and didn't find much. I think it s a RX450. Still do it?

I would want a remote - Sherwood has a remote

Your call

Any AV receiver NEEDS the matching remote. There's a lot of stuff you can only do via the remote.

If you can scrape up a few extra $$, go for that Sherwood. It's brand new and comes with, I believe, a two year guarantee

no experience with it but if it works you should be fine. Does it have a remote and does it come with it?

Still, a brandy new Sherwood would be guaranteed to satisfy. I know of four of them in service around here/

The RX450 isn't an AVR, it's a stereo receiver. Looking at the manual I see no features that couldn't be controlled by buttons on the front....but remotes are nice.
